I went in to a local garage for a puncture repair , and with that they said they need to change the TPMS valve , otherwise it will leak 🤷‍♂️ so they changed it with a snap in rubber valve and I am not entirely convinced that this was necessary - or was it ?

DC, is it a TPMS valve?

Is it accepted by the car monitor?

No,

tpms valves get easily damaged while tyre fitters work on the wheels, changing tyres etc . Was it the valve reason for pressure loss and repair at first place?
On almost brand new car It is very unlikely the valve been faulty unless some physical damage was made to it. This is very suspicious and typical behaviour from a dodgy traders. You need to ask to see the valve and properly explained  and shown to you the eventual cause of air leak, any potential damage done and how that happens. Don’t let them screw you, and you only accept original Toyota tpms valve as replacement. At least this will be me and my action.

Tony, the same is true for any part replacement, especially exhausts.  However it occurs to me that any disreputable rip off garage will have a bin of bust kit.

That’s what is important to differentiate, was it the valve at fault for the air leak or was a proper puncture like a screw in?
Because if it was a screw in repair and then a valve called faulty and needs replacement I would not agree to and let them proceed without me seen it first and all explained. And If I catch them lying to me they will buy me a new original Toyota valve, no other option.
People say everything is constantly changing, but one thing will never change and this is the car trade and those involved in., not all but too many.

You would have to be pretty unlucky to have damaged the TPMS valve unless of course you had badly curbed the wheel in which case you would clearly see the area affected. If this was a simple puncture caused by a screw or nail etc then the only way this would need changing would be if it was damaged taken the tyre off the wheel.

It does sound suspicious but obviously we do not know their exact reason they considered the valve might leak.

I picked up a screw , that’s why I needed a puncture repair , no problems with the valve.

Straight from taking the wheel off , they said a valve change is needed , otherwise it will leak 🤷‍♂️

Just a puncture from a picked up screw ….

That’s the problem - they’ve said it in a way that it is normal practice when doing a puncture repair / removing the tyre , that also the valve needs replacement 🤷‍♂️

Is it visibly a new valve?

Not TPMS valves but I had a new set of tyres (Black Circle supplied) and all valves were cut off and replaced as part of the fit and balance.  I had to scrabble around their tyre bay for the detailed valve caps.

Wish I hadn't bothered as some time later, bimetallic corrosion, and I could not remove them.  Had to resort to a hacksaw.   Never again would I fit bespoke metal caps.

Yes, I can see that it’s different than the other three, but other technical specifications I wouldn’t be able to say about it

With normal valves most tyre fitters will change them as a matter of course (It's extra money for them but they're very cheap).

With TPMS valves however they do not normally change them as they are not all compatible and they are a lot more expensive than the dumb rubber valves. However they do often change the valve core as they usually remove the old one to deflate the tyre faster.

How much were you charged for the TPMS replacement?

If it works and you weren't charged loads then I guess it's okay, but keep an eye on it as there've been posts from people that have had TPMS trouble after putting in non-Toyota sensors, or even Toyota sensors from a different model!

It is working at the moment and it was cheap as you’ve said just over a tener …

That is cheap - Toyota ones are over £70!

Doesn't sound right to me.

From reading the above, I get the impression that only the actual valve core was replaced, hence the fact that the TPMS is working ok. 🤔

Yeah sounds like a con or a very expensive valve core.
