Have you been working at the parking brake system? changing rear brake pads for example.. You will need to plug in a diagnostic scan tool and find out if any error codes are active.

Hi Jake, I have done nothing to the car. All of a sudden I have seen this.

I am not even technical enough to check the breaks.

Just wondering what could be the reason

Is it noisy when you turn on your EPB / disengage it?  (you'll always hear it if you try, but any noticeably louder, struggling sounds?)

Does it take noticeably longer than usual to engage / disengage?

Any deep water or flood weather / passing through water lately might have gotten water trapped.

At worst, it could be an actuator gone bad. Otherwise something wrong with the rear brakes in general cracking or getting jammed.

Some recommended reading on this, common enough issue:

Hello Shane, thanks for this.

To my surprise, all of a sudden the error has gone and parking break is working as usual .

No idea why this intermittent problem for a couple of days has popped up.

I havent done anything at all, except using the hand break button manually.

And while using it is normal while engaging and releasing the break.

The EPB error/warning light can also be triggered by faults in the Engine ECU.  You'll need to check the error codes.

today again I got the error in the car after doing a mile. No idea what is the reason is it a loose contact?

Check your error codes - could well be a loose contact but without knowing what's actually causing it would be like looking for the needle in the haystack.

I've had problems with the EPB warning light coming on.

Using Techstream it shows that the initial fault is with Code P2033 Exh Gas Temp Sensor circuit high Bank 1 Sensor 2.

There's another fault code on the EPB ECU  - C1201 Engine Control System Malfunction.

Clearing these faults works fine but the error/s just come back again.  I'm going to have a look at/renew the exhaust probe (if I can find it) and will let you know what happens.

Yesterday I have not seen the warning light. No idea why.

It is not conisistant, it comes and goes off on its own.

Shall I get it checked in toyota service centre in Leeds?
