Stop start starter motor life

I was watching a video on YouTube yesterday which was talking about the savings due to stopping the engine if your car was going to be stationary for more than a few seconds. They'd worked it out to be 9 seconds using a 1500 cc engine (uUS video though it shouldn't matter). Now I'm not disputing the maths but I did wonder how much shorter the lifespan of the starter motor would be? If it starts the engine 5 times more frequently does that mean it wears out 5 times faster. And how much more would that cost?

I don't think I would be worrying about the starter, the engine would be my main worry.

My BiL had stop start in his Jaguar.   He soon left it offer.

I fitted one 50 years ago.  Worked a treat but there was not link between engine temp and stop.  On my 20 mile commute it would cut out perhaps 3 times in the first 2 minutes.  Thereafter there was no stops for it to work.

The supplier was very good and swapped it out for an MPG display system.

It depends on the manufacturer, but the Toyota ones are typically overbuilt so they can be more reliable than normal stater motors!

Over the years I've seen more posts about problems with normal starter motors than ones in stop-start models.

All moving component have a finite life span, but it is reasonable to assume that the manufacturers have designed and built the stop/start motors to withstand the extra demand upon them.

Allowing for the liability the manufacturer have. 🙂

The time when they cared about quality of manufacture irrespective of age is long gone sadly.

These stop/start motors are probably sourced from a supplier to a broad range of car makers.  As such, the car makers would demand a robust performance for quality and reliability, if only to ensure that they [the carmakers] did not find themselves inundated with aggrieved customers.
