Outback or RAV4 for daily commuting and towing?

I want to replace my Avensis within two years with a successor with a higher ground clearance, which is suitable for towing a caravan of 1350 kg. I'm unsure between a Subaru Outback and a RAV4 AWD hybrid. I am familiar with the Outback's higher fuel consumption. Are there any former Outback owners here who would like to share their impressions and experiences regarding the comfort, driving behavior, reliability and maintenance of both cars?

From an economy perspective it is almost certain the RAV will be much better. The petrol Subaru is not exactly noted as an economy machine.
