No I didn't! 🤣😂

Oh yes you did:

When the positive terminal of a Battery is connected to earth or ground, it can cause a short circuit, leading to a rapid discharge of energy. This can result in overheating, damage to the Battery, and potentially even a fire or explosion.13 Feb 2017

In other words ensure your spanner is not earthed by mistake. I still have a screw driver with a burn mark.

Having to hold the key close to the power button is a symptom of a weak key fob battery.

It happens for me when I unlock the car from the app, not from the keyless entry.

To paraphrase Ben Obi-Wan Kenobi........

Surely not, the car is only five months old..

It would be under normal circumstances, but the error about having to hold the key near the start button is more commonly a symptom of a weak 12v Battery in ours - the Smart Entry system requires a surprisingly large amount of power from the 12v system to work, and if the 12v Battery is low I can imagine it won't function properly, forcing the use of the fallback immobilizer chip in the fob against the Start button inductor loop reader.

It's one of the reasons we recommend people DISABLE the Smart Entry system if they're going to leave the car for a while - It'll slow the drain on the 12v Battery.

The coin cells in the Smart Entry fobs are gigantic (CR2450! Near the size of a £2 coin!!  ) and should last a long time - I've not changed any of my fob batteries yet and they're nearly 3 years old! Even in my Mk1 and Mk2 which used much smaller coin cells, I think I changed the fob batteries maybe once in the time I owned them??

Those 2032s seem to be quite variable quality. I bought some a couple of years back for fobs and the ones in the Yaris keys (keyless entry) didn't last a year iirc, despite that I usually turn them off when the car is not going to be used for a few days. The next lot seem to be ok at present.

They aren't that expensive, compared to fuel and depreciation anyway, so if the fob is playing up it's a simple test to replace it. (Keep the old Battery to hand and if that wasn't the problem you can put it back and keep the new one for when it really is needed.)

Apparently it does display a low Battery message, it came on this morning as I was sat in the car before I went into work, car started ok tonight though…

Where did it display the low Battery message on your yaris cross? Did it start normally despite the message?

The wife's Yaris has been parked up for 10 days, and started without any issues. We're well chuffed 👍
