How do I protect my Aygo from theft ?

Recommended Posts

Hi all - I recently purchased a 2020 Aygo which I love! unfortunately only a couple of weeks later it was broken into outside my house, window smashed and touchscreen stolen 😞

Does anyone have any good suggestions for products to help protect my car from being targeted by scumbags?!

Hi H, not really much you can do to prevent this type of theft, just need to be careful where you park it, although as you said it was outside your house that may be difficult 🤔

Did the alarm on the car go off ?

You would think parking outside your house gives you some sense of security but unfortunately opportunist don't care.

Leaving nothing of value in the car is obvious but the touchscreen is valuable and so is the window. If this is a one off and it hasn't happened before then you may just of been unlucky. It may be worth trying your alarm to see why it didn't go off when the window was smashed.

If this has happened before or neighbours have suffered the same then it may be worth finding somewhere else to park or a neighbour has some spare space on their drive then it's worth asking.

Unfortunately car theft has always been a problem for motorists and I sympathise with you as I know from my own personal experiences.

Double locked? I Think my car (IQ) needs to be for the alarm to be on...

CCTV, motion detection lights?

Sorry to hear of your loss...

get an aftermarket alarm fitted, if they took a factory radio they knew what they were looking for especially if it was unbolted, The Mk 1 Aygos never had a door switch on the passenger side (lower spec models) not sure if it was the same on the Mk2 tho

Sorry to hear about your break-in. These bugs only had immobiliser, so as said you would need an aftermarket alarm to protect against this or maybe window protection film. If you had the posh 3 button touchscreen with carplay and android auto then they worth a pretty penny 2nd hand so thief probably knew what they were after. Know your pain cos many years ago had one my cars broken into in car park via the window and that car was alarmed, they nicked my road tax disc, but they were so quick the alarm was basically useless.

When I started working at Bristol royal infirmary a few years ago the police came along to advise on car security. They advised to leave nothing in the car. Not even in the glove box and to leave that open so thieves could see it was empty. Don't even have a rug or a blanket on the seat because a casual thief will think it's hiding something.

Agree, back in the day when mine was done, I did the same nothing on show, stereo was face-off and even had steering wheel lock on and they still broke in, but at least they didn't steal the car as it was pre-immobiliser days, but you can only do so much.

Quite easy Isobel if you know what your doing.

Probably someone with a faulty one and has already removed the faulty one from their car, so knows what tools are needed, etc

Electronic spare parts like this are so hard to source and so expensive that stealing them is some people's only option ☹️

VW and Merc systems can command ££££, iirc a used dealer was hit a few years ago and had something like 20 taken, they got in, got the key box, and went to town

I think low lifes and thieves have a completely different mindset from civilised people.

They perceive other people's property and money as belonging to them, and the only thing stopping them are physical barriers,or the owners of that property or money, that and a slight fear of getting caught.

And yes,it is a shock if you get robbed,or your car stolen,or broken into.

The only thing I can think of really, is if you live in a road or neighbourhood that has some good people, to get CCTV, and encourage others to do so.

Ok it doesn't stop a robbery on the night, but it does act as a deterrent.

Also report to the police every incident, they do help if a pattern of scumbags, err I mean gentlemen of the night, are targeting a particular area or street.

The maximum sentence for committing an offence of theft is 7 years. When was the last time anybody heard of someone getting such a sentence?  I am not jumping on any bandwagon, but the rot started in the 70's when offenders started getting a caution for an offence - "admit it son and we will just record a caution, you will not have to go to Court". Instant crime detected statistic! It has just got worse since then - "you have been found guilty of burglaring 6 houses, you will do 60 hours of community service". I despair.

I think we need something better than prisons; I don't even get what the goal of prisons is these days.

Thanks for your replies everyone 🙂

I don't have a driveway so it was parked on the road but right outside my front door. Hoping I was just unlucky and it won't happen again but I will look into your suggestions!
