MK1 rear exhaust heat burn?

Recently picked up a MK1 t-sport as a cheap run around which turns out to be in fairly good nick for the age.

Had a minor leak in the boot so I went about removing the carpet/sealing up the lights/tailgate grommets etc to fix and recheck for any water ingress.

While the passenger seats were folded down and the carpet was up i notice theres a localised area where the paint looks to have been scorched/discoloured.

Took a look under the car and theres a short section of the back box pipework that has no heat shield. Its where the pipe work for the back box comes up and along the floor pan towards the exit.

This is seems this unshielded area has potentially scored the protective coating exposing a largeish area of the metal thats started to rust. (the rust is not at the point thats beyond repair yet so I'm able to address that)

Ive noticed though that the area inside the boot (ist actually under the passenger seat) gets quite warm after a long run, also noticed the underside of the carpet has melted/burned a little bit.

It seems like the shield just doesn’t extend far enough to protect all of the body so im thinking of making some kind of custom shield to protect that area.

for the short them I've been coating the rusty area with acf-50 but I can smell it burning off whenever I use the car so need to sort something out and shield It from the heat If I don't want to have to re apply the stuff every week!

The cars got an aftermarket back box so im not sure if the heat shield is the original or not

Has anyone else experience something like this with their Mk1 and what did you do to sort it.

There should be a heat shield but they have a tendency to rot around the holes.  They aren’t expensive but you might have to get inventive with the fixings.  I’m sure I’ve drilled holes for nuts and bolts before.

exhaust hasn't done that, its too chard that had some welding done and they have set the underseal alight - common rot points are in that area

as for the carpet melting at the front, I would say the exhaust is blocked, does it pull well or is it slow to get up the rev range? plus that bend over the back axle looks very restrictive

There's a length of angle just left of the doughnut that looks like it might have been added for reinforcement. Or is it OEM?

If I could get under my Tsport to photo it, I would.

As I am pretty sure it's all original and would give you a clue as to correct exhaust and heat shields.

But sadly, I am unable to do that, the OEM Vs aftermarket is maybe another clue, rarely is a modification an improvement on the manufacturers spec that has had thousands of hours, and maybe millions of £s spent on development.

From what I can see in that picture the heat shield is original. Might be an idea to fit a standard silencer?

Yea i was either going to make one of those ones that attach to the actual pipe work with jubilee clips, or potentially wrap the un shielded part of the pipe with heat wrap.

I thought it was oem as its got the exhaust hanger bracket welded to it

carpet didn't melt at the front.... its at the rear, under the passenger seat directly above area pictured but to your question... no problems whatsoever with the car pulling away/getting up to revs.

You could get the proper shield but it sounds like a cobble up which will rattle and still end up with fire is in order.  You won’t get it through a legal MOT like that so good luck, that’s me out of here.

So you reckon the heat shield that's on there is not the original?

I'll see if I can find some pics online of the original With a stock back box to compare and get the proper one if that's not it

there are only 3 heat shields https://www.megazip.net/zapchasti-dlya-avtomobilej/toyota/vitz-38384/ncp13-55461/ncp13-agmvk-914378/floor-insulator-17779162

there is no way the heat of the exhaust will cause that sort of damage

They could have welded the hanger back after doing a patch repair. But looking again it probably is OEM - I can't imagine a repairer bothering to round off the corners of the angle like that 😄

Cheers @flash22

That helps to know. Will monitor the rust over winter/keep topping up the anti corrosion if necessary then do a proper job cleaning it up and re coating in spring/summer

No, sorry Rob, I completely misunderstood your comment.  I never looked properly.  That’s how they are so when you said you’d wrap something around it I thought that was how you were curing it.  As long as that big shield is there that’s it - it’s how they are.
