Window Shopping - Yaris Cross Excel

I'm always window shopping and although I'm happy with my Aygo Cross Exclusive (at the moment),  I'm always looking at the Yaris Cross (2nd hand, not new).

It must be the Excel, preferably the AWD, due to the trim level options it comes with.  I am looking at one that is listed as 2022 Toyota Yaris Cross 1.5 VVT-i(114bhp) AWD-i Excel E-CVT.

Can I ask what " extras" that can be added by the original buyer.  I have spotted a few on Autotrader and there is a one that has what looks like 360 degree all round parking.  It has cameras just under the door mirrors, along with the usual rear camera, but it also has one in the front grill (is this the Advanced Safety Pack) ?

I also notice that the infotainment system, has buttons on both sides, unlike the one I have in my Aygo Cross, which has AA and CarPlay, does this mean that the system with more buttons does not have AA and CarPlay ? (See attached photo), the specs in the advert does not mention this.

Apart from side steps, space saver wheel kit, and a towbar, I cannot really see any other additions on the Excel spec model that can be ordered at point of purchase or added after.

Thanks and Happy Hogmanay.

I keep looking at the Yaris X too. But the Yaris I have is sufficient for my needs and that's the only criteria I use when choosing a new car.

There are ACP/AA on it. The screen with the buttons are with the 360 camera - 8". 9" one doesn't come with 360 camera, strange but true.

I ordered my cross in excel trim and specified the city pack, this does come with a slightly smaller screen which has shortcut buttons either side, it was only £100 to add this , and, to me, was a no brainier, it gives surround cameras as well as dynamic reversing lines, ( they move about a bit ) , I think excel trim comes with an auto lift tailgate as standard, anyway, it was all the equipment I wanted and I wasn’t bothered about having a slightly smaller screen, it’s perfectly fine for me..

From memory the older 8" screen ( Touch n Go2 ?) used by the 360 Display system does not support Wireless AA/ ApplePlay. I think you need to use a wired connection via USB cable, which it does support.

Best check the technical specifications

Dealer gave me a Cross AWD for a day while my Yaris was having some paint work done.  I was surprised how underpowered it felt in comparison with the Yaris.  Dealer told me it's the same power train in both, the Cross AWD being heavier affects it a bit.  I found that the engine came on much more frequently than the Yaris.

That being said, if I had never driven the Yaris and had the Cross, I wouldn't know any different.  I was updating from a Citroën C3 automatic. Just my view!

With the MK3 it was underpowered and noisy engine for fast roads, at least for me. So kind of already knew it would be for the cross. My next car is most likely to be the cross, though it has to be the 130.

Is there an obvious way to tell if a Yaris Cross has AWD.  Is it in vehicle description or does it state it on the tailgate ?

The AWD has some controls on the center console close to the gear lever.

So you can spot it easiliy if you look inside the car.

Got it and it looks like the letters AWD are on the tailgate under the Hybrid Badge.

The Smart Connect version also needs a wired connection though I have managed BT it did not reconnect later and I have only done it twice.

Yes, if I go for that model, I'll miss the wireless connection and with any model, I'll also miss the wireless charging !!

Roy, the Smart Connect can be challenging to setup but does work wirelessly around 99% of the time for me.  Using Samsung A54 & Android 14.

I did have issues after Android updates and after a full Android upgrade that required me to reconnect the phone. This did take several goes.

I did have an older phone with an older version of Android and bluetooth software. I a!so used that with a medical sensor that relies on bluetooth connectivity and was able to connect ok BUT I found that the latest version of AndroidAuto required more bluetooth bandwidth than the old phone could provide. Therefore I had to upgrade to a new phone.

I have a suspicion that problems are that the latest Android Auto (and Apple Car Play) challenge older phone hardware rather than it being a Toyota issue.

Also be aware that the AWD version doesn't have space in the boot for a space saver spare wheel

Good point, as I'm always one for a space saver kit or even a full spare wheel when and if possible nowadays.  So the AWD may well be off my list whilst I'm collating all this info.

Keep in mind that it has AWD so if you do get a dollop of snow it helps, that the AWD has really nice multi link rear suspension and also that the AWDi will also be used to stabilise the vehicle in a skid.  I personally would always opt for it.

I agree with the AWD/4x4, apart for my current Aygo Cross X, all my past cars have been Lexus/Toyota 4x4 and it just is so much safer and a comfort factor when driving in dodgy conditions.  But the AWD/4x4 models are always more expensive...for obvious reasons😂

Worth every penny imo 😉

I've no wireless charging on my Yaris HB but reading feedback from who has it is mainly an useless toy.

I would have agreed with that statement before I changed my Samsung S23 to my Google Pixel 8.

When I used Google maps using my Samsung S23 wirelessly and have it on the charging pad in my Aygo X, the charging could not keep up with the power of Google maps using the phone, so in affect it did not charge quick enough, so indeed was useless and really did bug me big time.

However, now I'm using my Google Pixel 8,  it charges it to a full 100% when sitting on the charging pad using Google Maps wirelessly. So it's great that my Pixel 8 connects wirelessly to Google Maps and I can just chuck my phone on the charging pad, very convenient.

So I guess it depends on the phone (which i did suspect !!).  So for me, wireless charging in my Aygo X actually does what it should do.

Yeah, the problem is there's no real standard for it so it's very hit and miss.

The only device I've owned where the wireless charging impressed me was an old Palm Pre, from back in the days where they could still make smart phones that had keyboards and didn't have the footprint of a brick like we have now. It came with a dock called a touchstone, that magnetically pulled the phone to the right position and orientation and was really slick and simple to use.

Most modern pads are just an induction coil, so getting your phone on in the right position is difficult as you don't get any hints to when they're lined up optimally. If they'd standardised the positions or had a similar maglock system to the Palm Pre it probably would work better...
