Yaris mk3 2017 model 2NR-FKE issues

Hello and happy New Year!!

A family member just got a used petrol 1.5 Yaris with 2NR-FKE engine and we just noticed two things that got us wondering if they are normal or have to look further about them in next few days.

First of all i used an OBD device to check about everything i would think of as important to know for the vehicle condition when the engine is running.

1. Engine coolant temperature is almost always above 93°C with radiator fan is on all the time when driving in city conditions while outside temperature is below 9°C and a few times it goes above 96°C with radiator fan working in high speed.

2.Battery doesn't seem to be in great condition but the charging doesn't help either because voltage don't go more than 13.3-13.5v while driving

Do you think that it might be an issue with alternator?

Anyone knows if these two issues could be considered as normal or not?

Thanks

The alternator's a bit tricky as it's a 'smart' one, and runs at a lower-power mode a lot of the time to reduce load on the engine and supposedly increase mpg.

I forget what conditions they will run at full power, but usually it's if there's more load on the 12v system from e.g. headlights and AC, and under braking.

get the Battery and alternator checked, what's the KM/Mileage, does the top rad hose get hot ? does the temp drop if you put the heater on full hot and full fan

take obd2 voltage readings with a pinch of salt, temperature can also be off, especially if it a lower end scan tool

But then why is temperature gauge needle on the dashboard a little bit off the middle and the radiator fan kicks in all the time?

What makes you say that Bob?

A reading is only as good as the software and calibration

as for the op's issue, coolant needs changing, cooling system is air locked/blocked, bad thermostat, a failing/worn water pump, worn aux belt, faulty CTS and/or any combination, alternator output is ecu PWM controlled - load dependent

if it's losing coolant, it's either dropping it or burning it, a pressure test on the coolant system will show it
