EPB and seat belt

I used to be able to reverse my car out of the garage either in ev mode or with the engine running without having to put my seatbelt on, however, since the car had to be jump started on the Wednesday after Christmas, it now won’t let me reverse out until I put the seatbelt on, has something been reset during it being jump started?, is this even possible?..and can I get it to revert to how it was…

How is it stopping you from reversing? Not letting you pull it out of P even when holding the brake?

Yes it says something like put seatbelt on to engage reverse, tried it this morning and the brake will not release until I put on my belt…

Afaik, all doors are shut, there’s nothing indicating otherwise, I’ll try tomorrow and see if I can remember what message comes up..

I think this might be  related to the Automatic Parking Brake mode, where you initialize it by holding the button up (for 5 secs) until you get the "EPB Shift Interlock Function Activated” displayed.  Then the EPB  disengages when you move out of park.

It is off by default and probably got reset.

  • EPB function will not work if you unbuckle your seat belt but you can use the hand brake switch manually.
  • Its a bilt in safety feature.

I think you're mixing up the EPB and Brake Hold again Derek!

Yesterday I reversed and moved my car with both driver-side doors open, no seat belt on and one leg out (Disclaimer: Don't do this; I am a professional idiot) so it's definitely possible!

Cyker I am not mixing it up with brake hold function!.

Your EPB brake function takes a dislike to you undoing your seat belt.

I always reverse my car out of the garage without putting on my seat belt. (Toyota Yaris Cross).

I just put it in ready mode, foot on brake, move gear stick to R, handbrake disengages automatically, back I go watching mirrors and reversing camera to avoid clipping the garage door frame.

Really??

Mine doesn't - I can freely engage P+EPB or D/R-EPB whether I'm wearing my seatbelt or not!

If Brake Hold is on and in use, and I take off my seatbelt, it does flag up a message saying it's disabling the Brake Hold and engaging the EPB though.

Well my car disliked it but maybe it just if you expect electronic handbrake to engage but after removing seat belt it refused to and I then applied it manually yes there was a warning message but its  possable softwear has changed since I it last warning as that was some time ago.

I was sort of right and wrong.

It is related to setting the Automatic Parking Brake to on.  Like others I thought it released automatically, once Drive / Reverse was engaged. However from page 190 of the manual,

■Parking brake automatic release function The parking brake is automatically released when slowly depress the accelerator pedal. The parking brake will be released automatically under the following conditions:    ●The driver’s door is closed

●The driver is wearing the seat belt

●The shift lever is a forward or reverse position.

●The malfunction indicator lamp or brake system warning light is not illuminated.

If the automatic release function does not operate, manually release the parking brake.

So, if the automatic mode was selected then you have to have you seatbelt plugged in. If not selected then you have to release the brake manually BUT it does not matter whether the seatbelt is plugged in and the car will move when power is applied.

Not my experience (or @Cyker)… automatic mode selected, seatbelt not connected, move out of Park (EPB releases) to reverse….car reverses up the drive.

In 9 months of ownership I have never touched the EPB button.

Well reversing out this morning I definitely had to put my seatbelt on, the epb would not release, I even kept my foot on the brake longer to see if I was doing something wrong, but, it wouldn’t move without having to put my belt on, it never did this before I had to have it jump started…

Well I am confused BUT I notice Primus1 and I have a Yaris Cross while Cyker and Graham47 have a Yaris recorded in their profile.

Would Toyota bother to create such a difference between the models? Could it be a different code base?

OK, just been out in the freezing cold to try on my YARIS

Auto EPB set to Auto on/off

Car in READY Mode,

Door OPEN

Select REVERSE

Can reverse.

Door CLOSED

Select REVERSE

Can reverse.

As you say, it may be a Yaris / Yaris Cross difference, but if it was me, I would try setting EPB to Manual and then resetting to Auto.  If that fails, perhaps disconnect Battery for 10 minutes as somethings may have got confused when it was booster started.

EDIT : NO seatbelt fastened

I have a 2022 Yaris Cross Icon and don't have any problems with EPB. It never asks me to put my seat belt on to activate or release it.

Maybe mine thinks I’m a danger to myself and others so it asks me to put on my seatbelt for everyone’s safety..😀

I tested my Yaris MK4 today regarding EPB & it has changed by softwear upgrage I presume.

With seatbelt buckle disconnected it will drive forward or reverse with out brakes bean applied only in brake hold mode it will display a warning (Brake Hold Uaavaible Driver seat Belt Unbuckeld).

This was Not the case when the car was first purchased.

Interesting - Mine's always been like that, although mine's a year later than yours so maybe already had updated software...? :confused1:

If mine starts doing that I will go to the scrap yard down the road and get a seat buckle to bung in its hole. See how it gets on with that 😀
