Toyota won’t check a Mazda 2 Hybrid

Hi all.  My wife’s Mazda 2 Hybrid (99.99% Yaris) will be 1 year old beginning of March so we’ve just been checking prices and availability as we want it ideally servicing on a Saturday morning.  Our Mazda dealer, 35 miles away, quoted £153 early bird price including hybrid health check.  Our nearest Toyota dealer, 5 minutes away, said he can service it as a Yaris but can’t carry out a hybrid health check.  I said it’s a Yaris and the hybrid bits are marked Toyota.  He said it’s daft but he’s not permitted to as it’s a different manufacturer and it’ll be a different system.  A bit odd but there you go.

The 2 isn't sold by Toyota GB, they won't have the car's information on their system, and the new car warranty is provided by Mazda.

Similar will apply to the Suzuki clones of the Corolla and Rav4 PHEV, where Suzuki provides the new car warranty, etc.

We had a 2007 Mazda 2, which was built by Ford on the Fiesta/Fusion production line, and a Honda Concerto built by Rover (the Rover 200 was based on the Honda).

Same applied. So it isn't odd at all.

Yeah, most manufacturers are quite strict on that sort of thing, and as a franchise they don't want to get in trouble with Mr T(oyota GB).

It's partly why having an import can be such a pain, as even if it's identical to the domestic version, they still treat it as a third-party vehicle and won't do any special servicing outside what they'd do for any third-party car brought to them. It's especially annoying with the hybrids, where there aren't many third-party alternatives for doing diagnostics, repairing and servicing the hybrid parts.

The trick is finding a garage run by an ex-Toyota mechanic who knows all the tricks and isn't constrained by Mr T's rules

As above.

It's got a Mazda Badge, therefore it's a Mazda. I'd have been far more surprised if the local Toyota dealer had said yes.

"We" (and they) know it's 99% Toyota but there shall be all sorts of "complications" if something happens. Bring on the small print and lawyers if something is damaged or fails etc.

My RAV4 has a BMW derived N47 engine. I'd be amazed if BMW would even look at it let alone get "hands on."

That's the way it is these days.

Andy.

I regularly get people owning Suzuki Swace wanting parts, when Suzuki dealers bin them off saying it's a Toyota, you need to go there. No it isnt a Toyota, granted it's built by them. Then they want warranty work doing, sorry but that cannot happen, we have no control over that

Yes, she loves the car.  I enjoy driving it too even though my own car has a lot more tech.  We looked at the top spec Yaris at the time (January 2023) but preferred the seat material in the Mazda plus it has HUD like her previous Mazdas and a Qi charger.  She's missing heated seats and steering wheel and I can't see the MY24 UK Yaris having these.  Around town we average >60mpg.  On a good run we average 72mpg.

The Skoda dealer we use openly advertises that they service all brands within the VAG group for the same price and since all use identical OEM parts warranty is not an issue (parts such as the oil filter have all the brand badges on).

And there are lots more differences between say a Fabia and an A1 than a Yaris and a Mazda 2 (bodies are totally different as are the interiors).

Interesting! Maybe they can get away with it more because Skoda, VW and Audi are all owned by the same company, whereas Mazda, Suzuki and Toyota are all separate.

Well yes. Our Smart car is serviced by a Mercedes dealer.

Thanks all.  Tech explanations all make sense.  Now if the MY24 UK-spec Yaris comes with seated heats the wife will probably move across to Toyota but I doubt it will.  The top spec MY24 Mazda2 Hybrid seems to have everything bar heated seats.  Prices and specs for that are now online.

Just come across this thread. I'm surprised at many of the responses. Just to use one example:

The OP is asking about servicing, not about having warranty work done on his car. I have to say I'm rather stunned reading some of the above comments as it appears many don't understand the law surrounding the manufacturers warranty.

Warranty work may only be carried out by an authorised dealer ( theoretically you can have it done elsewhere but you'd have to gain the permission of the warranty company first ), but to maintain that warranty, any bona fide VAT registered garage can service the car.  You could have the car serviced at a Dacia or a Rolls Royce dealer and the warranty has to be honoured - by law !

Thought that was common knowledge?  There was an EU law which has been in place for what must be 20 years now that stopped this anti-competition practice. It's called block exemption or something.

As long as a car is serviced according to the manufacturers schedule and the correct specified parts are used, any garage can service the car and the warranty will be 100% maintained.

The Toyota dealer the OP visited can service any car, any make and it's manufacturers warranty will be maintained. If the dealer is saying that he doesn't have the necessary equipment to properly service the Mazda, then fair enough but I'm very surprised at that because if Mazda is introducing some type of protectionism, then they're breaking EU law. ( which also applies here in the UK ).

Haven't a clue about Mazda, but Toyota are very funny about this. Please remember that we do not receive 10year warranties wth our cars, we receive 3yr warranties here in the UK, just like most other manufacturers. From then on it gets a little complicated. In return for servicing your car at Toyota, you receive a free year warranty ( up to 10 years )

I don't know what's involved with Hybrid Heath checks but my question to the OP would be do you actually need a hybrid health check in the first three years for the warranty to be maintained?  Remember, no manufacturer can have exclusive access to the equipment necessary to service a car.

I know Toyota require it in year 3 onwards because that's what's required in return for the extra year warranty incentive.

Apologies for the long reply.  🙄

The OP is asking about servicing including the hybrid health check, which the Toyota dealer cannot do as the Mazda won't be on Toyota's system (as stated in original reply).

My reply stands.

Similar to the earlier Aygos.  Those that subscribed to “it’s a Toyota with Citreon or Peugeot badges” until it came to a warranty or policy warranty issue and then it was No Monsieur.   Buy an Aygo in the first place.
