Holed engine & damaged second cylinder

I have a 2018 Toyota yaris with just over 20,000 miles on it. While driving on an A road it began to wobbel and engin light went on I pulled in to a local garage. when I turned the car off white smoke came from the front drivers side with a burning smell. I recovered it to the Totota dealer they said it had a hole in the engine and the the second cylinder had failed. It is stil under manufactures warenty but the toyta dealer is questioning weather the engine fault is covered by the warenty. Anyone else had similar experiances?

If its Toyota serviced, it should be covered you need to keep in contact with the dealer and Toyota customer services and make sure they are both on the same page, it's rare for an engine to blow especially at such Low miles - has it recently been serviced, it either starved for oil (lack of oil or boiled the coolant and seized

Thrown a crank? Lack of oil?

Not enough information.  If I put myself in their shoes I’d want all the mileage and service information and by whom and I’d want to look at the car.  Just a walk round and see the condition can tell an awful lot about how it’s been looked after.

if it has a hole in the block, it has more than likely thrown a rod

The car was bought from the Toyta dealer 2018 it was a demo car for the dealership and had about 5 thousand miles on it when I bought it. It was always serviced at the same dealership I bought it from at the regular intervals required.  Except for a minor scratch when some one banged their shopping trolly into my car at the supermarket it was in perfict condition.

The technician at the dealership who is dealing with my car told me the air filter was dry and the oil was uncontaminated when they drained it from the motor they are still investigating why it failed but they are also questioning if it will be covered by the warranty. I is still under the manufacture's warranty.

I guess it has a 5 year warranty which is now expired, however this is irrelevant if the car has been regularly serviced by Toyota.  It is either a manufacturing fault or servicing fault.  If it is a servicing fault they will probably deny this and cover it up, putting the blame elsewhere. The engine shouldn’t go pop at 5 years old and 20,000 miles and would imagine that Toyota will do the right thing and get it sorted out asap.  It’s certainly in their best interest.

This catastrophic failure only possible as above explained , it’s either serviced error, manufacturing defect or misuse, too high rpm, or flooded combustion chamber with water or liquid fuel. Whatever the reason is except water flooded, it should covered by the manufacturer warranty.

If it is a 2018 car, the new car warranty (5 years or 100,000 miles, whichever occurs first) will have expired in 2023. If it has been serviced according to Toyota's service schedule by a Toyota dealer up to date, presumably it should be covered by Relax.

As to whether the fault is a warranty issue, depends what the investigation uncovers.

My 5 years expired last year. I wasn't told about or offered Relax, I thought that was only for the more recent cars with shorter main warranty.

No, it applies to any Toyota under 10 years old and 100k within 1 year/10k of a main dealer service. I had a £900 climate control unit replaced under Relax on my 2012 Avensis during late 2022 for example. I had to ask them to claim under the Relax warranty though, I get the impression some dealers would rather customers didn't know about it!

No, Relax can apply to any Toyota within the age or mileage limit,  serviced by a Toyota dealer, where the new car warranty is either near to expiry or has expired. See the first page of the following:

So, if I'm reading that right, as I have it serviced annually at Toyota dealers the Relax gets automatically activated at no extra charge.

Exactly - Even if you had never serviced it at a dealer before, as soon as you get a service done the car gets 1 year/10k warranty applied from the date of the service.

The whole thing with Relax is they're trying to encourage more people to use the dealer for servicing, so there's no prior requirement like there usually is with extended warranties.
