Advice needed on an engine swap for a 2007 Yaris D4D

I recently was informed that the engine in my 2007 Yaris D4D is bad and needs to be replaced (I think a bearing or something broke in the engine, ruining the internals). The engine is a 1nd-TV, 66kW (with vgt I believe). But the problem I had was that I could not find that exact year of engine for sale at any scrap yard, nor could my mechanic. My question is, can I just use any model year of the 1nd-TV, or does it need to be a specific year?

I know there are subtle variations between the different types of this engine model (different turbos, different HP ratings, different injectors), but all I need to replace is the engine itself, I can reuse most of the external parts. Here is a link to a very comprehensive booklet on the 1nd-TV: https://toyota-club.net/files/faq/21-07-20_faq_nd-engine_en.htm

(Probably my mechanic should answer this question, but there's a language barrier and he seemed not to know much about this engine either.)

I would appreciate any input.

Perhaps its time to sell your Yaris and invest in a newer car. You could end up spending loads of money trying to get the thing working with the wrong engine and considering the car is 17 years old the chances of getting a good engine are not great.

Thanks for your reply Paul, I think your advice is solid because the cost of an engine and replacement easily can become more than the vehicle is worth. I am still trying to replace the engine though 🙃

For anyone interested, I found that the 1nd-TV engine went through a few major changes during its life. For my case, I found that the 2005-2007 models should be the same, while from 2008 and after, Toyota changed the oil pump and pan significantly (which might affect compatibility with older models, though I lack the expertise to say for certain).

In short, any 1nd-tv engine between 2005 and 2007 should be an easy swap (though that is only a theory based on research).
