Battery costs too high for electric Aygo X replacement

Recommended Posts

Just seen this as well, so thanks for posting, not surprised as think with the release/life cycle of the Aygo X it gave Toyota room to can it or build it. Also the cost/range of other leccy small/city cars just shows how currently the numbers don't add up. Also doesn't help that government will penalise manufacturers not building/selling enough leccy cars, how is that going to shift new cars of any type which are now so complex and full of tech the prices only been going one way for years.

Whilst it's not quite in the same city car category, you only have to look at the Electric Vauxhall Corsa which costs £40K, vs the ICE which is circa £20K......

The time frame of 2035 is far too short to produce a product that is affordable, and able to 'like-for-like' replace people's ICE vehicle. Let alone the lack of infrastructure (in the UK) to support the demand. Hopefully synthetic fuels, renewable fuels, Hydrogen etc, is in a better position by then.

The insurance costs alone make electric cars unaffordable as well, and I've heard that the extra weight of the batteries make extra wear on the tyres. I won't be converting unless absolutely necessary and there is no other option.

I'm glad Toyota are not bowing to pressure to make a stupid mistake, and are sensibly waiting for the tech to catch up.

The funny thing is their original road map is still right on the money - They predicted where the state of the art would be and so far reality is matching it perfectly.

IMHO EVs won't take off until we have a major Battery breakthrough - That's what everyone is waiting for, and will bring the real-world utility to EVs that everyone is waiting for. What we have now are just expensive and heavily compromised, very much for people with specific optimal niches and those who can afford a 2nd toy car.
