Looking for some advice

Hi all, I'm looking for some help and advice.

My partner currently drives a 2017 Mini Cooper S and is soon changing jobs, she'll be doing a 50 mile round commute 5 days a week and is considering a Yaris hybrid for her next car.

Can anyone give me an indication of some average running costs? I've done some finger in the air maths but looking for some real world examples if possible.

TIA

I cannot give exact figures but a hybrid will give you better than that.

Google mini clutch change and that may persuade you to get rid.

£500 - £700 quoted in the comments  :shocking:

Probably 60-80 mpg on a MK4 Yaris - from late 2020 if budget can stretch to that. If pre late 2020 then it's lower mpg and car is not as good as the MK4. If the choice was MK3 make sure to get a car with 195mm tyres, this will help with cornering.

Yeah definitely been trying to lean towards a Mk4, she's not hugely bothered about interior spec although I'm trying to find at least a Design.

Yes get a MK4 design spec onwards as that has LED headlights. The icon spec comes with halogen and it's poor.

We have a Yaris Excel. Miles per gallon is in the hi 60s, low 70s. Service costs are £230 for a minor service and £315 for a major service.

It is a car that I can highly recommend.

You also save on replacement of brakes (The regen braking reduces brake wear significantly) and clutches (There isn't one!)

I love my one. It's a really good car

Me Too. I'm picking up a new one in 15days time, not the 130. Basically the same as the present one.

If she's not very fussy a MK3 might be fine. Probably about 10mpg less than a MK4, but it should be a lot less to buy and have lower depreciation which could well offset the extra fuel cost, depending how many years she planned to keep it. You need to do the math. (Before you buy - don't do it after or you may get buyer's regret.)

How much would you say it costs to fill the mk4 hybrid?

Yeah she's been considering that as well. It's hard to say what's best to do at this point tbh, I think the interior is far better on the Mk4 which would make life a bit more comfortable on those commutes.

I had the MK3 and currently the MK4. Both are 36L fuel tank. For 50 miles a day, looking for comfort, do whatever you can to get the MK4. It handles and has better safety tech than the MK3.

Is that from completely dry? Yeah a Mk4 is definitely my preference but sadly I'm not the one making the final decision 😂

If using regular fuel about £40

That's good to know, I've done some basic sums on the basis that it'll cost roughly £35 to fill. Doing 250 miles per week, again, roughly. She should be looking at filling up once every 1.5 weeks? So somewhere between £70-£90 in fuel per month?

Surely that'll be much cheaper running than the 2.0 Cooper S.

If she gets 60mpg that'll be £26.50 at £1.40/litre. Comes to about £115/month (there are 4 1/3rd weeks in an average month).

She's definitely a very steady driver so I'd guess over 60mpg would be possible

2.0 Cooper S it must be a late one, i suggest she drives one as a hybrid is a very different driving experience and style they are no rocket ship they are more laid back, a 1.8 corolla is a better car for munching motorway miles

Winter ~ 60+- mpg

Summer ~ 75+- mpg

Both are indicated by the car's computer, actual 5-7% less, MK4.

25 miles one way the MK4 handles with ease, MK3 handles less well, though still a good car.

Though if u have a driveway then consider an EV car. Used Kona 62Kwh.

I've really tried with the EV approach but she just will not have it, too much uncertainty for her for some unknown reason.

I just paid about £38 for nearly 28 litres to fill mine up, and that was about 410 miles covered.

Half of those were my normal work journeys, and the other half was this weekend's rounding up of friends and hooning up the A5 to the NEC Auto show and back

I need to give you a go in mine - The way I drive it is anything but laid back :naughty:  Although it can also do laid back very well too! The Mk4 has an amazing Jekyll / Hyde split personality and is one of those rare cars that feel at home both driving gently or like a hooligan, and I switch between the two constantly

I will say the seats aren't fantastic though - Both me an Mojo have had to get lumbar support cushions as the seats were giving us both lower back pain.

I thought it was just the silly  'sports seats' in the higher trims, but Mojo's has normal seats and had the same issue so I guess it's just the seats in the Mk4.

It's certainly not an issue I've had with the Mk1 or Mk2, and Mojo in the Mk3 but I don't know what they've changed about that in the Mk4 that makes it so much worse
