Toyota Auris 2009 MMT Flashing N & Clutch Actuator Problem

Hi

I bought a Toyota Auris 2009 MMT (multimode transmission) from an Autotrader dealer on September 7, 2023. Just a week after the purchase, the car showed a gearbox issue, and the auto electrician found a P0810 issue on September 15, 2023. When I inquired the dealer about the car's condition before the purchase, he assured me that it didn't have any issues. However, my wife and I have been stranded on the road several times due to the Flashing N issue. The car was stuck in N mode and not moving. My wife felt panicked and found these breakdowns to be life-threatening. We captured the symptom we struggled with in the following video.

Frustrated after failures to fix the problem at the local garage, I paid £144 for an inspection at Toyota RRG, and they recommended changing the clutch actuator, which would cost £2,000. Realizing I could not afford such a high repair cost, I took my car to the local garage once again, and the mechanic found that the actuator's motor is not the correct one. He is now searching for the right one in the aftermarket. Over the past four months, I've wasted a lot of time trying to figure out the problem. My car is still in the garage, and my wife and I are using a taxi to bring and pick up our child every weekday. I am angered that the car was not thoroughly checked before being sold. Is there anyone here who has experienced the same issue or has advice on it? I am getting worried whether the issue can be fixed. I have been surprised that there are not many mechanics who can fix MMT.

Why not return car to dealer to fix or refund?

Personally i stay well clear of any automated clutch gearboxes.

I have heard that the carbon brushes can wear out. Can they not try taking the clutch motor apart and checking/ finding suitable replacement brushes?

I reckon the best thing to do is utilise your consumer rights and get the dealer you bought it from to fix it or give you a refund.

We aren't big fans of the MMT gearboxes as they have proven to be a black mark on Toyota's general record of reliability, and as you say not many mechanics know how to fix them properly.

A lot of the time, esp in older cars, it's just a case of the clutch needing changing, as it's basically a manual gearbox, but most places end up changing everything except that. The system also needs calibrating when anything's changed which hardly anyone seems to know how to do.

If you need to get it repaired. Find a mechanic with toyota techstream as there will be a utility for the calibration procedure. If they dont have techstream, avoid them

Toyota RRG is very expensive for repairs. I have found a local garage and fixed the problem. You need to find a garage that can fix an MMT. In case you cannot find one, here is the location of the garage where I fixed the P0810 issue: A A Auto Electrics, Bradford BD4 7DS. I hope you can fix your car.

Ok.although it's far from me.i can't risk it to drive down..how much did they charge you? Was it the clutch actuator?

They have a tool (an electronic panel with a display) to monitor error codes and their solutions. The error code (P0810) was first detected on the panel and disappeared after 10 minutes of remote control. As I stated in the original post, I have once replaced the motor in the clutch actuator. You may also need to replace the part or the entire clutch actuator. However, you need to find the right person with the appropriate monitoring devices. It was not easy to find a mechanic who can fix MMT. But the fee was not high. I changed the clutch actuator motor for 150 GBP, which was warranted by the dealer, and paid much less at A A Auto Electrics for fixing the clutch position control error.

Where did you fix the actuator, which garage. Did you have to take the actuator out and give to them or did they do everything for you

I have a 2007 MMT and to date it has cost me about £7.5k...not all in one hit...but over 7 years up to about 2018. I purchased it in 2011 from a Toyota main dealership and it still had 1 year extended warranty on it. During that period it went into N on a few occasions, which I found terrifying tbh! It was allegedly 'repaired' under the warranty. 1 month out of the warranty it went again and this time it cost me an eye watering £3k! I had used all my life savings to purchase the car and had to use my credit card to pay for the repair. It really wasn't a lot different and still would end up in N..an engineer came to pick it up from me to take it in as I had refused to drive it and he told me that it wasn't my fault as Toyota had intimated...that it was the car! He advised that earlier models were in fact recalled and they'd stopped at my serial number. It was once again tweaked...but I refused to pay as I always felt they weren't repairing it properly. It was ok for about 2 years and then did it again! I rang Toyota and complained, I was beside myself with all the worry of it. They wanted £3k plus labour +VAT...I started ringing around every garage in the area and no one would touch it. Then fortunately a garage owner told me about a local garage who he knew had a Toyota trained engineer. They took my car in to assess and he said he noticed it didn't creep forward amongst other things. He advised it would cost me £2.5k total so I knew I couldn't buy a decent automatic for that so yet again stuck it on a credit card and got it done. It felt like a new car and it felt like that's how it should have always been. I still have the car. There have been other issues with it though over the years to include problems with water coming in through my taillights, indicators not always flashing on the inside, working externally and an audible blink noise. If I had enough money I'd change the car, alas I haven't. My worry now is that last year's MOT listed it as an advisory...all previous years not been an issue. The cost of repairing that could be around £250. To date I've had 2 new taillights too due to ingress of water. I think my car was the Friday afternoon at 3pm.car!
