I read on the car magazine review of the Yaris cross online they say due to the extra weight of the Yaris cross the hatch will do 10 mpg more ? Surely that can’t be true ?

I agree Bernard but I suppose with the Yaris hatch not being as high up as the cross it would be more streamlined say on the motorway etc

Yeah people have mentioned that on here too when the Cross came out; I don't see how it's possible just from a physics point of view, with the Cross being heavier and having a larger frontal area.

I suppose it's possible at higher speeds if the back of the Cross is more streamlined (The back of the Mk4 is pretty slab-like  )

I guess I'll remain skeptical unless I see more Cross owners beat my mpgs

Well the X is a heavier bigger car with bigger wheels so to me it doesn’t make sense that the X would be 10 mpg easier on juice. They’ve both got identical engines and are basically a bigger car and bigger weight being hauled around by the same engine. They’ve got different 0-60 mph, as well.

Iirc the 1.8 Corolla used less fuel than the 1.5 YC.

I was given a Cross when my Yaris was having some paint work done. It was the AWD version.  The car seemed sluggish compared to the Yaris and the engine seemed to be on more frequently. The dealer agreed when I discussed it, he said it has the same engine/hybrid system and is a much heavier car, so the cross was never going to be as nippy as the Yaris.

No chance of the cross better economy than hatchback. It's like doing a mile journey with 100mpg recorded, that is just 1 mile, can do that in the hatchback too.

Honest John Real MPG. Figures are submitted by readers but there is no indication if they are calculated or form the ever lying dash display. Plus you never know how honest people are.

Regardless of that the Yaris Cross is 63.3 mpg, the Yaris 67.1 mpg.

So its a win to the hatch as anyone with 1/2 a brain should expect. The bigger, taller heavier car can never win when they are mechanically  identical.

I'd agree with that, makes sense, and agrees approx with my consumption in the YC.  Id imagine the regular Yaris gets a few more mpg.  I'm sure they'll both be running the same software.
