Damage from road debris on first drive 😡

Hi All

So I spent the last 3 months getting my vitz aka Yaris ready for its IVA test , this morning as I was 2 mins from the test centre the car in front of me kicked up some debris (looked shiny) and has smashed in to my rear drivers door taking 2 gauges out down to paint work as if it’s been hit with a sharp metal object.

I’m beyond livid and have the incident on my Dashcam , given it’s location on car I’m wondering what I can do as I don’t want to get it painted given Iv not even used the car beyond its IVA drive as of yet.

can anyone recommend a plastic stick on piece that I can use to cover it up and stick to outside ? Something that won’t look Terrible or tacky , once Iv calmed down and driven it I’ll get the door repainted but I’m gutted as the car didn’t have a mark on it and this happened , I could honestly cry 😢

also as a caveat do you need a registration plate to drive to IVA or Mot I have chassis only insurance but police stopped me on route to MOT and said I need a registration plate though insurance say I don’t 🤷‍♂️

apologies for the rant and thanks for any any help

Ack that's super unlucky

Toyota used to sell something called Stickerfix which were basically colour-matched vinyl stickers to cover scratches, but I'm not sure if that's still a thing...

It should be fixable tho...

That is really unlucky that debris could do this but you probably wouldn't get anywhere trying to make a claim. It is deep and won't polish out but you could try chips away or another mobile paint repairers. They are cheaper then a garage and will make it look like new for a lot less money.

That's a bit unfair. Pothole damage OK, but you said it looked shiny and the damage doesn't look like a stone, so probably a long, thin piece off another vehicle that's been thrown up. So the fault of whoever 'supplied' it. Beyond the gov's remit really.

But I sympathise. These things always seem to happen when something is new or just cleaned.

Don't know about the plates but I didn't think you could get a UK reg without the IVA certification. Pro dealers/importers have trade plates of course.

Definitely not as test folk said they are seeing this more and more with state or roads and lack of cleaning / patrols done.

Been around the world and never experienced this level of damage from debris anywhere 🤦‍♂️ we have storms and the roads are barely locked at mostly just cleared to side and be done with it

In that case you would have rung your insurance company or their nominated windscreen company, paid your excess (think its about £90) and thought no more about it.

Just speak to people and see if any can recommend a smart repair company. Use one that actually has premises, those who do it on the road side or in a tent are a waste of time. We have a really good one locally but they are no good for the OP.

That's down to the primer, but not metal. As others have said contact a paint / body repair company and get some ideas and quotes. You're not alone.

I disagree.  My first paint job was done at home by a local firm I found online.   I defy anyone to spot the repair.

The second was with the Toyota marketed repairer who removed a dent at home.   Also impossible to spot the repair.

I would agree it could be pot luck but you can get a bad repair anywhere.

if everything is legal, they can give you a notice to get it fixed or £100 fine, a lot of kit cars are driven to iva's under the IVA/Mot exemption proof of appointment is needed tho

From .gov

You cannot drive or park your vehicle on the road if the MOT has run out. You can be prosecuted if caught.

The only exceptions are to drive it:

  • to or from somewhere to be repaired
  • to a pre-arranged MOT test

so did it pass?
