RAV4 Hybrid AWD (2020). It was cold the last few days in Europe. Some days ago I got a "Hybrid System Malfunction" message (just a message, without red or yellow check engine light).
I used the OBD2 reader and found: HV Battery ECU error codes: P0AA6, C0901, P1C80.

I took the car to the service, but they had a scrum and the car had to wait some more days to check.
It doesn't look nice. Do you have any idea what that means?

Smells like a cable corrosion. T-TCI-5503-20220324-English.pdf

If that's the case, then don't worry. It's covered by Toyota even if your car is out of warranty.

Actually, double check that cover. They initially extended a warranty for this to 8 years and 160k miles in the US and Canada but I'm pretty sure this now apply to all continents. If I was in your shoes, I can't imagine myself paying for this from my own pocket. You will likely get this fixed for free, wether the extended warranty applies or not.

Tnx.
I looked at this before.
But AFAIK this problem isn't so frequent in Europe. I also checked the VINs and I'm not sure if my VIN (JTMRW3FV70J04xxxx) is included in the problem.
I don't know if the number "3" is before the letter "R" 😁

Maybe additional information - the car wasn't used for over five weeks (except the last few days I drove almost 500 km). Also, the cold was in the last days (between -10 and -15 Celsius in the morning). This can be the trigger.

Low Battery can sometimes trigger Hybrid System Malfunction error messages also.

Two potential causes often reported on here....

- Low 12v Battery - not enough to power up the HV control

- Moving from Park to Drive too quick after pressing Start.

I'd probably lean towards the first.

I hope so. The car is waiting at the dealer's parking for its turn 🙄😬
They have long queues: winter problems with cars, sickness ...

Have you solved out the issue Kacnje? If yes, could you please advise us about the corrective actions on your issue? Many thanks

No, not yet.
After three hours of working, the service didn't find the reason for the error. It looks like high-voltage cable corrosion to me, but they didn't confirm this yet. Maybe there is some other reason.
I hope if the reason is cable corrosion, that they can replace it and make the damn thing more endurable. I can't imagine that this  will occur again in the next years.
Any idea if Toyota has a better solution if they replace the cable (holes for faster drain or more seal around or better design)?

Not really I'm afraid. They just redesigned a connector to be half open, but this won't make much difference in the long run.

If you are really, really looking to solve this for good and have some trusted garage that can perform the connector replacement, you can try to contact the person from this video to get the custom part.

It's made from a material that won't corrode, so the seal will not allow for any moisture to get in. It might be worth it if you want to keep the car for a long time.

I saw this on YouTube. Interesting.

Is this connector problem only related to RAV4 or to all hybrids?

Just the RAV4, and only the AWD RAV4s specifically.
