Return to Toyota ownership

Hi all,

Recently purchased a 57 reg Auris 1.6 vvti and back into ownership of a Toyota! 🙂 Just a couple of questions to begin with:

- Which fuel option do most prefer or find is most efficient/economical for this engine - E10 or E5?

- The car is coming upto 50k miles soon. Which oil should I be using?

- I miss power fold mirrors! Are they easy to install? Would the wiring already be present for a quick install or would I have to get the relevant wiring loom/harness?

- The headlight lenses need a bit of a clean. However, I still find them lacking a little in terms of light output. Any bulb upgrades recommended? Or should I go with a HID kit?

I'll hold with the questions for now as I'm sure there'll be a few more over time 😄

Power fold mirrors should be possible as its available on excel models. However your wiring harness may not carry the extra wires. Its just another pair of  12v wires going to each motor from a dpdt switch .

Im planning to upgrade mines in the coming months, and have the motors ready to swapout in existing manual mirrors. There are some youtube vids showing this done on a corolla.

Hopefully i can connect the two wires on the chassis side, rather than run them from the wing mirror and door conduits. Watch this space.

I treat mine to E5 every 3rd or 4th fill, runs fine on E10.

As for oil I always buy my service packs through Opie. I went for Millers Oils XF Premium C2/C3 5w30 Fully Synthetic last time.

As you have the same engine as mine I’d recommend you take the restrictive snorkel off that feeds the air box and replace with something shorter, 6” of angled aluminium tubing I went for.

My engine is 8nrfts 1.2t, recommended oil in uk is 0w20. I use MANNOL 0W20 Fully Synthetic Long Life Engine Oil API SP, GF-6A, Dexos1 Gen2. In my eyes, better to change more frequently with cheaper oil, as long as it meets spec. agree snorkel exhaust is rather twisted and appears restrictive, but performs.

Mannol is very cheap and good.  There are many kinds of 0W-20 from Mannol, and the best one is the one with VW-certified 508/509 with higher additives and base oil.  0W-20 7722 is ok with 1 year/ 10k miles oil change interval and should have no oil consumption issues in a long run.  If you do 5k miles/6 months, 7918 0w-20 Legend Ultra is very cheap and good. It is better running decent cheap oil every  6months than luxury oil every 1 year.

Regardless what whatever people claimed, statistically almost all gasoline engine will consume engine oil if we do 10k miles interval from clogged piston rings. 1.8L, 2.0, 2.5L Toyota are also included for oil consumption issues with extended oil change interval of 1 year.  the one that pretty imune is Toyota V6 2GR-FE famly.

Have you compared the prices with Toyota? I found Toyota by far the cheapest source of 0w20 back when I had the Mk2, and especially now with my Mk4, which takes 0w8!

The 0w20 was like 1/3 to 1/2 cheaper than what I could get even from Opie Oils at the time, and I think they were a forum sponsor at the time. And last time I looked I couldn't even find anyone selling 0w8 outside of Toyota except in 1L bottles!

(Fortunately the Mk4 is not using any oil, as expected of a new(ish) car, so I've not looked for a while!)

Yes, looking pn eBay.

Cheapest original toyota 0w20 5l is about £66.

Cheapest Mannol 0w20 api sp gf6a is about £22.

So about 1/3rd the price.

Toyota's preferred oil for a 2007 petrol Auris was 5W-30 - ALI SL, SM or SN.

0W-20 was used for the modified Optimal Drive engines that came in from 2009, not for earlier models.

Thanks all for your input. Really appreciate it.

@solero Look forward to updates on the power fold mirrors.

@MrZardoz Thanks for the advice on the snorkel/air intake. I'll definitely look into that as sounds like a quick and effective upgrade 🙂

I can tell you the HIR2 bulbs give poor light. Perhaps somebody can explain about the HID kit.

As you will see, there are general complaints about the headlights in the Auris (for instance, the topic

Gen2 Auris has projector light. Don't get HID, too complicated with ballast, rellays, etc. and not brighter than high grade LED.

I recommend V45, GTR ultra 2, Apollo X7, etc. They are much brighter, about 3x effective brightness.

None of them are legal though but OK because projectors headlight have am excellent cutoff. Will never blind anyone.

We don't have to use 0w-8 oil for newer Toyota.  0w-20 is fine.  Older cars need 5w-30
