When a code P0A80 is stored, it means that the powertrain control module has detected a malfunction in the hybrid vehicle Battery management system .This code indicates that a weak cell failure has occurred in the hybrid Battery pack. Was there any other codes .

It's likely to that one or more of the Battery cells are failing.

As far as a solution you will need to get the battery tested to confirm the faulty cells and they will give you options of possible cell or complete battery replacement but cost may be the factor for you.

You can see which cell is about to give up by using a bluetooth OBD2 scanner from veepeak and Dr. Prius. Remember that a full Battery replacement from Toyota was around £1,800 last year when I called. There is a surcharge, and if you return the old Battery, they will give you some money back, but I can not remember how much.

£1,800 was the price for the Battery pack without labour. Plenty of people around the UK refurbish hybrid batteries, so shop around. That will probably be the safest and cheapest option for you.

I would start with checking that the fan intake is clean It is supprising how much fluff and debris it picks up and sticks to the intake mesh

lift the back seat, pop the corner cover off to access the fan

New Battery from Toyota will be the best solution. Anything else it’s a compromise and imo only viable if you about getting rid of the car. Those independent guys who work on hybrids and promise they replace Battery cells with new are actually replacing with reconditioned cells, and those does not last long afterwards.

New Battery approx £1500, PLUS additional £1000 until you return the old one, it's exchange, they won't charge that if being done in a garage, expect to pay around 3 hours labour. Every time somebody has one reconditioned it will completely fail within a short time, don't waste your money

Assuming that he gets a hybrid Battery from Toyota, is that plug-and-play or will some "programming" need to be done? Telling the car that a new Battery has been installed?

There will be an element of checking the system which will not be able to be done without sufficient knowledge, I would also discourage any person who has no knowledge of Hybrid systems to keep well away, you could kill yourself

Have you been servicing it with Toyota? It might still be covered under the hybrid health check warranty!

Yes,

if the car was serviced within Toyota official dealers in the last 10000 miles or 12 months you can book for diagnostic and hybrid Battery replacement under warranty. Make sure you don’t delete the faults or disconnect the 12v Battery. If the car was serviced elsewhere or as diy and no hybrid health checks were done you can’t claim on warranty replacement. 👍

hello all thanks for your responses. i spoke to a garage near me that specialises in toyota Hybrids and they advised that they do not change individual cells, they would just change the Battery completely. He's quoting £1200-£1500.  does anyone know of any other garages worth trying?

That's a fair price tbh

Yeah, individual cell replacement is usually not recommended as it's nearly impossible to balance them, and it's a lot more work. If that quote is to supply AND fit a new Battery it's not bad. But if you can get it done under warranty that'd be the best option

Price is good.
I am about to book a new hybrid Battery replacement soon. Total price £1755 from local dealer for Auris hybrid 2010.
The car still drives but it is tricky and not so pleasant. Perhaps next week.

I'm guessing yours is well out of warranty...!

It'll be interesting to hear from you the difference in how the car feels going from a EoL Battery to a fresh new one!

Could you please be more specific about the first part? I'm not trying to kill myself; I just want to find more out of curiosity.

What does this system check involve?

There's an American forum called Prius Chat that is full of posts about DIY maintenance including batteries. Be warned that there's dodgy information as well as people who know their staff. Those who get stuck into their own maintenance open the Battery and check for corrosion at busbars and sensor connectors to Battery ecu. However, as above posts, the only reliable repair is new genuine Toyota Battery. Watch training video about HV safety if you are going to attempt. The thing is lethal and you abso need to understand what you are doing

I think that maybe my experience in this is not relevant to a 2014 but I do not know the dates of the cars that had the fault that mine had.

My Battery started going toes up so I took it all apart. There was a problem with the batteries leaking and Toyota released an update that involved applying epoxy to the Battery terminals as a recall. The epoxy they used went conductive after a few years and the batteries discharged themselves. I spent a good number of hours chipping off all this manky stuff and cleaning the terminals, reassembled the Battery and it worked fine again for a good number of years, until my dad wrote the car off.

Do read about HV safety as it will kill you if you do anything wrong. I spent a good few years qualified as a linesman, trained in HV work for utilities and it still scared the hell out of me.
