I've Seen A Car I Like. Please Help!

I have no male influence - It's a Toyota AYGO x-trend at a main Toyota dealer.  It's £10,995 cash and is 3 years old.  The MOT runs to June 2024, but the road tax ran out Sept 2023 - I don't get that?  What should I do?  Should I ask them, if I'm interested in purchasing it, if they could tax it for me and extend the MOT all in for what they're asking for it of £10,995?

Thank you in advance.

Hi Michelle, the dealer would normally supply the car with a full years MOT and maybe 6 months road tax. You could certainly ask for a full years road tax as part of the deal.

The fact that the road tax ran out in SEP 23 would suggest that the car has been sitting at the dealer since then ?

Thank you.  Yes, it's been transferred over from one dealer to now one more local to me.  I sat in it and liked the feel, but I've yet to test drive it.  It was Saturday and the salesman was busy.  I don't want to pay out £10,995 without having some perks thrown in.  It's a lot of money.

Hi, Michelle, The first thing you need to do is test drive the car to get an idea how it drives and feels. If you are unsure ask the dealer if they can arrange for you to have the car for a couple of days on loan.

Our Toyota dealer offers this and understands that sometimes a short test drive is not long enough.

If you like the car it should automatically come with a 12 months MOT. Not all dealers offer 12 months road tax but at a minimum they should offer at least 6 months.

Look at the cars MOT history and you can check this out online. Ask for any receipts for any work carried out. Check the service book to make sure it's been serviced at the recommended Toyota schedules.

You should get an idea of what the dealer is like once you start asking the questions above and any other concerns you may have. If they are accommodating then they will do their best to sell you the car.

If they are unwilling or try to deflect the conversation away from your concerns then walk away.

At the end of the day there are many other cars available at a good price so stick to your guns and you will be pleased you did which ever way the sale goes.

If you have the registration number go to gov.uk and check when it was first registered, if MOT runs out in June that will make it a 2020 car.

If you like the car go back to the dealership and say you want 6 months tax and a full mot if they want the sale they will do something for you

If they won't do it go somewhere else the dealership I use also compromise so I usually get a deal even if it's only a tank of fuel

The MOT is a one shot price so no chance of refund, but you get refund on road tax so that's why it not taxed and as said it in the dealer network so they move cars around and use trade plates etc.

I was going to say it probably quiet time of year for sales so puts you in stronger position, but if salesman was busy maybe not, but depends you may get new MOT if less than 6 months left, some dealers do some don't. But as mentioned worth haggling for some freebies, maybe service, fuel, mats etc. also hopefully you getting a 12 month warranty as well, you never know and it very near the end of month so they have their targets, but don't be rushed and you doing it right by asking on here the right questions. As mentioned not sure they will throw in years road tax, prices of that so large now, probably hits cars bottom line, but worth asking cos you never know.

When you test drive, also check service history and MOT history (you can do that online at DVLA),  also push all the cars knobs and buttons, hopefully they will leave you alone with the car after the test drive to check the car over on your own and at your own pace/time. Also you may want to do your own HPI check, I never trust the dealer's, they pretty cheap considering the price of car, so you know no outstanding finance, stolen, etc.

As mentioned, don' t feel pressured or rushed and walk away if it doesn't feel right.

My new car was bought nearly 5 months ago and it only has 500 miles on it my last car only had about 6000 on it when it went back

After 18 months so the dealership is always on the asking me to change it because of the low mileage

The ball is in your court and if you’re not a good haggler get someone who is, it’s your hard earned money. Take someone with you, you have received good advice from the members on this forum. Write down the things that they have advised you to check. When satisfied and you still like the car, then negotiating the price and or perks can begin.

Your right to ask about the mileage, but it is quite low, but as long as it stacks up with the service history record sounds ok, but the general condition of the car is more important. You get some cars with low mileage but used and abused, but others have been to the moon and back but very well cared for.

manual is a lot better imho. i did not like the auto box. plus our motors are quite noisey at higher revs, maunal means you can keep the revs down..

The dealer ain’t likely to let the sale of a car fall through over road tax. They will probably just reduce the price of the car by the cost of the road tax. The fact it’s been moved also suggests it’s been sat in a different dealer forecourt for a period of time with no sale. I see the car on Auto trader and looks very nice . it’s a June 2021 car and not yet had its first mot as not due till June 2024

Hi,

Lots of excellent advice above. 👍.

Try to decide beforehand what is and isn't a deal breaker. And stick to it. It's the sales team's job to sell you the car and they will (should) be very well trained at it with every "technique" known and available to them. They are NOT your friend, their job is to sell you a car (you might guess that I've fallen foul of some in the past). Absolutely take a friend with you.

If it "feels" right then consider buying but if it feels wrong WALK AWAY.

Good Luck.

Andy.

I just want to thank you all for your replies. It just shows how good it is to reach out and ask and ask and ask! 😘

I had to spent £231 yesterday on my 17yo Citroen C1 (exhaust area) 🤷‍♂️ and, it's due its MOT beginning March.  I had to get it fixed as the exhaust was literally hanging off.  It's due its MOT in March so I'll have to get it to pass that and then I'll go round looking for a newer car. I can't keep paying out hundreds per year on my Citroen anymore,  especially as it's not worth a thing.
Thank you all again.  My sights are also set on the Aygo Cross xx

No worries, another thing even your very old C1 is worth good money, these little cars always commanded good prices compared to some and with a fresh MOT even more. Remember it is ULEZ compliant as well, so another plus, so don't accept scrap value for it i.e. few hundred quid which main dealer will offer, but worth investigating prices or even selling private for a better deal. If you leave it till March then there will be a new crop of Aygo X (Cross) hopefully being swapped in for the new reg and you may get better deal cos dealer wants shift a few extra part-exchange Aygo Xs. Main thing is you have bit of time to look into prices, specs etc and bone up on the info, ready to do battle!, good luck.

Last summer we bought our daughter an Aygo x-play, 19 plate, it only had 7k on the clock, it was up for 10 grand.  They don't tend to get bought for high mileage so I wouldn't worry about that.  She only does short journeys in it though so every few weeks I take to to work just to give it a clear out.

If the car you're looking at is only 3 years old I guess the mot is first due in June.

I'd look at the service history as especially with low mileage people don't service yearly as they should.  Yearly is handy as it makes the service and MOT time the same so less hassle overall.   What's the history like?  You might be able to get them to throw the June service and mot in for free.

All I would say is it's likely to be a perfectly good car but if you have any doubts or the deal isn't right or it just feels off walk away, there are loads of nearly new Aygos out there.

If it's a Toyota dealer it should be freshly serviced and mot'd for you.

A few years old, aygoX, low mileage..  I think the price they want is not exaggerated.

I am not from Britain but passed a Dacia Duster,  3 years old, for around 20k euro. Can't have been much more when it was new.

It seems prices for second hand cars are still really high.

I wouldn't bother about the tax  as its very cheap  again so full tank gas its only £50 so  mot will be full 12 month  id be more along the lines how much warranty do I get  an what type  as there some warranty that are pants  you get 3 claims  to the max of £2000 each . Others its unlimited  and I'd be asking  for money off the price . See if you can find out how much the car is the way I did mine I filled out an insurance quote as the last 4 years the insurance quote iv asked  THEY TOLD ME how much the car is .so fill one out then see how much it is less than the car your looking at . I know you need to pay the salesmanship fee garage's cut . But this time year they be wanting it gone as new reg out in march they want the floor space for new batch cars. They might sell it at a loss just to get it shifted..
