I notice that in the handbook for my 2023 Yaris the tank capacity is given as 33.o litres without rear wiper, 36.0 litres with rear wiper. In the UK brochure it goves the tank capacity as 36.0 litres, and all models are fitted with a rear wiper.

I'm curious why the absence of a rear wiper means a smaller fuel tank is fitted.

Anyone know why?

Weight? How much does 3 litres of fuel weigh versus the complete rear wiper assembly and associated cabling? (not forgetting the included extra wash spout and tubing...)

Actually, ignore what I said! That only holds true if it's the other way around... (if you see what I mean)

1 litre water = 1 kilo

1 litre petrol = 0.73 kilo approx.

3 litres of fuel would weigh about 2.25kgs

Density range of petrol is 710 to 775 gram/ litre at 15 degree celcius.

Thus weight of 1 litre of petrol at 15 degree celcius varies from 710 to 775 grams.

This variation is due to the fact that petrol is a mixture of very large number of hydrocarbons and the required peorperties as per astm for petrol lie in certain range for each value.

Now crude varies quite a lot according to its source so while distillation is done in refineries the required properties are maintained within the limits but they can vary within the limits so there is variation in the density of petrol.

Also the density varies with temperature so have given range at 15 degres celcius which is standard practice across industries. Density and temperature are measured at given temperature and then density at 15 degree celcius is found out using ASTM tables to get reference density.

Also Euro 4 petrol tends to be in higher range of demsities while Euro 3 used to be in middle range of densities.

I think nobody found out which market got the version without wiper because it ain't European 😉 with that information we might take educated guess why is the tank smaller there

I think the 'Yaris' without a rear wiper is a completely different model - IIRC it's a Saloon ( :confused1: ), and I've only seen them in e.g. indian, philippines, thailand and places like that (mid to mid-far asia) markets.

Hi All

I bought a Yaris Cross Petrol Urban 6 months ago. It is suppose to have a 42 lt tank.  Tonight I got down to 4 kms left of range, the orange petrol bowser light was on and the last blue bar on the fuel gauge was showing. So I pull in to buy fuel, 32 litres. How is this possible? It appears I have the tank from a Hybrid version which is 32 lts. Not happy, taking it back fir sn explanation.  Also, be careful ov the cruise control. It may be set to 60 kms but going up a hill it surges to up to 65 kms.

Range doesn't take reserve fuel into consideration

One of the 1st things I do when I or the wife gets a new car is to run it until the light comes on and then fill it up to check how much fuel is actually left. For many years, most cars have about 15-20% reserve. From memory, a Juke we once had had nearly 30% in reserve.

Pretty sure the YC has 36 L (including reserve). My wife tends to do a lot of motorway commuting, and when I fill it up from ~1/4 tank remaining/420 miles I usually only get 25 or 28 L in it.

25 L means there is still 30% fuel remaining.

The YC Hybrid does, but not sure about the non-hybrid; I'd assume they have bigger tanks but as we don't get them in this country I'm not 100% sure!!
