Intelligent Speed Assistance - speed warnings

I've left mine on the default setting - so no latitude at all. But it is Display only, so no audible warning, and that works just fine for me ...

The longer version of 'no' would be 'yes' but it appears not to be available in the UK:

See note 4.

From what owners tell us, somebody, somewhere seems to have decided that we don't need that option in the UK ... 😉

Is this from the manual for our pre-ISA versions? That's what it says in mine and I can change it. However, I'm sure I remember reading that the legislation for ISA is that there cannot be adjustable tolerance. It was a while ago though so I could be wrong.

Sorry, I should have said - it's a snip from the latest 2024 Owner's Manual ...

Never had an issue during test drive, so never thought to investigate further.

Neither did I and frankly I would not have bought the car if I had known. The other bells and whistles such as the front and side cameras are great but don't make up for the feeling I have done myself a disservice and should have stuck with my 2019 Rav Hybrid.  After her first drive today my wife has similar feelings about the new steering wheel.  And, joy of joy, after lecturing me about driving within the limit to avoid the bongs she said "they are a distraction". My next concern is over the "deal" with a free charger installation. It comes from British Gas (eventually???) and gives me a Hive charger...but it seems Octopus, my energy supplier don't list it as compatible with their intelligent overnight charging tariff. I have aske them for clarification.

So I was coming out of Manchester the other day and the smart motorway said 40mph. Amazingly the system spotted it (it rarely ever does) and set the speed and warning on the HUD to 40. Then the smart motorway signs changed to national speed limit. But the car thought it said 50mph so I had 50mph reading in the red circle on the HUD when in fact it was 70mph. Not much later the signs changed back to 40mph and car then decided it was 70mph. WTH?

Introducing laws against stupid tech makes them stupid laws. It's now an unnecessary distraction. Human Factors specialists were clearly not involved in any of this. Law makers or car manufacturers.

Grrrr grrr grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr  🤣🤦

Oakham has a 20mph zone by a school when the lights flash.  Not a problem today as the lights were flashing, however outside that zone the limit is 30 but the car doesn't know that as there are no signs.

I have sent a FixMyStreet report to the council.

Toyota does seem to have over-done this EU rule. I have just driven a brand new Peugeot 2008 hire car from Alicante for around 100km on a variety of roads and only got bonged at when going over 30 in a 30. All other excesses or change of limit were only met with a flashing sign on the instrument panel. I could live with that.

Presumably this car also adheres to the regulations indicating Toyota have gone beyond what is required.

My sentiments exactly. Spoils what I am finding to be possibly the best vehicle I have ever owned. (55 to date) but I am getting used to pushing Start and immediately double clicking OK then arrowing  down to RTA then OK and afterwards holding down LTA till it goes red on the display and subsequently enjoying the silence of electrical  drive. Currently ( geddit?) getting 51 miles predicted EV after a full charge. Done 360 miles now and only used about a pint of petrol. Current mpg is 1750mpg and average kWh is approx 4.5 miles per KWh . Way to go.

Not necessarily. The implementation for all new cars sold doesn't come in until next month. From the middle of 2022, it was only required on all new type approved cars, i.e. if the manufacturer introduced a new model or facelift after July 2022.

I wouldn't know if the Peugeot 2008 had an update since 2022.

But is likely to have been applied to all cars built in the last six months or more - else we'll see a good number of pre-registered cars or brand-new cars going back to be retrofitted ...

Very true, but maybe hire car companies buy some of their fleet at a discounted rate from older stock?

Could be either of these reasons I suppose. It is a 20b by the way not a 2008 - my mistake. Drives quite nicely for a Pug but expecting something to fail fairly soon😁

Cue outrage. But we must all be guilty of not taking sufficient interest in what’s going on behind the sensationalist headlines.

I call myself informed but I have been caught out with this tripe. I am “living with” the new habit of re-setting RSA and LTA each trip but the problem I had with the pre collision system (see earlier) beggars belief. See the traffic lights and my dash am speed indicator….screwed just as I start to accelerate because the pre collision system knows better then me?????

I couldn't quite work out what they were saying.

My fear was or still is some automatic speed limiter based off a poor implementation of road sign detection.

I'd give the car away if I'm bottling at 20mph in a 50mph as a hazard to myself and other motorists because the system got it. Which it mostly does.

Luckily you are in a 2021 vehicle so the “mandatory”  implementation wont be applied. Like me i guess you wont upgrade to a 2023 or earlier

Much as we are enjoying our recent purchase I would have stuck with my 2019 Rav if I had known what a nightmare the new tech is, not just the new safety stuff but quite a bit of other pain in the rrrrs such as keys now having an identity which causes problems when hubby and wife have different smartphones. (So complex even sales staff don’t understand it)

Shouldn't this be 'you wont upgrade to a 2023 or later'.

At the end of the day, all new cars will have to have intelligent speed assistance, and there is no getting away from it unless one stays with older vehicles (ie pre-2023), some of which will have a form of ISA anyway.

Yes ‘younger’ as in vehicle age

Quite likely in the (distant) future some of these things will be reversed. Not always but sometimes common sense prevails.

Given the sale of seat belt socket inserts on Amazon etc so that people can avoid the nagging when they choose to break the law and go unbelted,  I suspect nefarious tech is already working hard at making a fast buck.
