Hi, Im new to here so go easy 🙏

My daughter bought a June 2019 registered Manual Petrol CHR from motorpoint in July 2023 with 23K miles on the clock. She recently took it into a Toyota garage an hour away for the fuel pump recall and a few days after this she had trouble getting into gears 5 and 6, (likely totally unrelated)

Unsure of current Mileage but can't be much over 30K, (car still in local garage)

Today it went into a very reliable local garage to get looked at and they have informed her they the Synchro in the gearbox is the problem, the gearbox needs removed and sent to a specialist for repair and then refitted, with an ininitial guesstimate of over 1K for the repair

Not been to Motorpoint yet but expect them to say the 3 month warranty is up and not their problem, but will try anyways.

Also considering booking it into the main Toyota dealer it was in previously and ask them to look at it without telling them what she's been told is the problem, to get confirmation and in the hope that they will cover the repair(or part of) under some warranty(wishful thinking I know)

Has anyone any suggestions on the best way forward with this and is it a common problem with this car

If you need anything further info to assist in the way forward just ask and I'll try to answer as best as I can

Thanks Danny

a June 2019 registered Manual Petrol CHR ...

... will have been sold with a "5 Year" warranty - there should have been a sticker to that effect on the rear screen. This 'warranty' consists of a 3-year manufacturer's warranty (expired in June 2022) and a 2-year extended warranty supplied by Toyota UK which will cover you until June 2024 provided that you or a previous owner has not invalidated the warranty. The extended warranty is reasonably comprehensive and should (we'd need to check) cover this sort of gearbox issue.

So yes, book it into a Toyota main dealer with a view to getting the issue resolved under warranty.

Thanks for the feedback. Can you advise what would invalidate the warranty please?

Generally Toyota get the hump about Warranty if the car has missed a service or not been serviced at a Toyota registered dealer or garage.

Just found this online and under section 3 E it sates it has a 5 year warranty because it was sold before June 2021.

I can't see any conditions on this tho???

The new car warranty will cover manufacturing faults.

It depends what the Toyota dealer diagnosis of the fault is, and whether this is a manufacturing fault or other issue.

Be aware that if the fault isn't covered by the warranty, there may be a charge for diagnosing the issue, as the dealer may want to cover their labour costs, and this applies to other marques as well.

Servicing is every 12 months or 10,000 miles, whichever occurs first. If it has been serviced outside the marque's dealer network, the onus, if requested, will be on you to prove that servicing has been carried out to schedule, etc. This will be the same whoever the manufacturer is.

TBH, I don't think that is quite correct, but who am I to argue with what is written in black and white. Toyota UK are saying that you have a 5-year manufacturer's warranty - that won't expire until June 2024. So, you are covered. The "Gears and Shafts; Synchromesh" are covered even under the Additional Relax warranty so you should continue to be covered up to 2029!

As above, the warranty would be invalidated if:

  • The car was not serviced to an approved standard at the appropriate service intervals - check your service history. The service needs to have occurred within 30 days and 2,000 miles of the due 'date'.
  • The car had been used for motor sports events, as a taxi, for hire or reward, for driving instruction for reword or for an illegal activity.

You should have the Service and Warranty Booklet with the car - unless it has been lost / thrown away along the way. Either way, a dealer should be able to advise ...

The car is booked in for 22nd Feb so fingers crossed. I'll update here afterwards

Thanks for all info received, it was very helpful 🙌

You haven't said but I'm guessing that your 4yr old car with 23k on the clock has had 1 service in which case Toyota won't want to know.

Its had 2 services, 1 at Toyota and 1 at motorpoint. It's booked in with Toyota in under 2 weeks so will update here later. Thanks 👍

You'll find it should have had a service each year so it's a couple short, because it's low mileage Toyota might look at it favourably and I only mention about the servicing as there are a lot of 3yr old cars possibly PCP's or lease what have never been serviced or only had one service since bought. Because WHO in their right mind would get a new car and not have it serviced (unless they didn't own it)

Toyota service intervals are 12 months or 10,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

So a June 2019 car with 23,000 miles should have been serviced on the time basis (every 12 months), and should have had 4 services already, with the 5th service due in June.

As mentioned earlier, the warranty covers manufacturing defects. The limited service history may have a bearing on the validity of the warranty.
