Yaris 3 (2017) Hazy/Blurry rear camera

Hello,
The camera became blurry (I can't see a thing through it anymore, just some colors of abstract shapes) shortly after a visit to an automated car wash.

Apparently there's water damage somewhere inside, though I could not see any sign of water or mist. Some people suggest using hair dryer to get rid of any moisture. This had no effect on it. The lens is clear too.

So I guess I'll have to replace it. I called an official Toyota dealer to get the new camera and they shocked me when I saw the price. 500 EUR just for the camera.
This is logically a no-go basically for everybody, since no one would waste 500 EUR for a PAL/NTSC crappy old school camera.

I could find used OEM cameras on British eBay, so I guess that's the only way to tackle it.

I am not very practical at repairs. Do you think it's difficult to replace the rear camera and/or fix the old one somehow? I was trying to find a manual online, but the stuff I found was not very helpful.

I can provide photos if needed.
Thanks for any advice!

There's a person on here who can probably help with advice on that, so hang on (maybe a day or two) and he'll likely be able to tell you what's involved.

Its water ingress, it is a sealed unit (the seals can fail over time/weather conditions)

the camera is bolted/nut into the tailgate/handle

I will have to look up the part

Is your car a first facelift or a second facelift?

2nd facelift

Hi @flash22,

thanks for the reply. I'd say it's the first facelift since the tail lights are different than those on the picture

I just looked for the part online, and there is no way that the reverse camera is £623.03 for a brand-new one. That is insane!

Surely that's a mistake as I cannot justify the price. I'm sure he can get a second-hand one, but there is no way someone would pay £623.03 for a new one.

Yep, I managed to find a couple of used ones. It should arrive in 2 weeks. I'll update this thread once I replace it. That's gonna be a challenge for me 🙂 Never done this before. Does Toyota provide some kind of a disassembly manual for it ?

pop the inner tailgate trim off with a trim tool or a taped up flat blade screwdriver, it should be straight forward

  • 3 weeks later...

Yesterday I managed to replace the camera. It was really easy. Just as @flash22 said, popping the inner tailgate uncovered the 2 screws holding the camera in place.

Thanks folks!
