Yaris 2014 Hybrid - Headlight Issues

Hi all,

I have a Yaris Hybrid 2014 model. Yesterday I drove the car home from work with no issues and parked on the drive. Roughly 2 hours later I went to drive somewhere and found that both headlights were not working. The issue still persists this morning.

Things that are not working:

  • Both front headlights
  • Both front full beam headlights
  • Both front sidelights

Things that still work:

  • Everyday LED lights
  • Front fog lights
  • Rear lights

I've check what I believe is the main headlight relay and that seems to be functional. Coil resistance of 160 Ohms and closes when 12V is applied.

Any help troubleshooting would be much appreciated! I'm having difficulty finding a reliable source for relay/fuse locations for this model. The Haynes Manual that comes up with my reg is for a 2017-2020 Yaris.

Auto lights? is it a facelift car (chrome strip across the front between the lights)

Good suggestion, but there are no auto lights on this car (other than the everyday LEDs which only come on when in gear)

is it a facelift car with projector headlights, 1 bulb could have blown and not been noticed now the second one has gone (HIR2) 8-10 years for a bulb is about right

projector lights use 1 single filament bulb for high and low beams

It uses HIR2 bulbs. Just been through the headlights now and it seems both bulbs have blown. Sidelights may have been a red herring as they are very dim but do appear to be working fine after all. One headlamp bulb was intermitent when shaken but the filament is now fully broken. Replaced both in 2021, so seems a bit strange!  Thanks for the help anyway!

Cheap Chinese bulbs ? or decent branded ones, the toyota optiwhite are a bit hit and miss

the bulbs are wired together, so a shorting bulb may cause a voltage spike and have taken out the other

I've never liked the idea of the bulbs only having 1 filament, which means if you lose the dipped beam you also lose the main beam, especially if a bulbs fails during driving in the countryside at night. The headlights on the Mk3 facelift are not the most effective in the first place, so losing 50% of the limited light output on a dark country lane and losing one of the main beams as well could be pretty dangerous really.

Seems the headlight assembly simply uses a shutter which raises and lowers to block off the top of the beam on dipped, and allow full height beam on main beam, using the single filament. These bulbs are ludicrously expensive as well to make things worse, compared to a standard H7 bulb they are over 3 times the price and I just cant see what it is about the HIR2 bulb that justifies the massive increase in price over a standard halogen H7 bulb or H4 that my last Mk2 had.

Mine are excellent. Far better than our other car with 'normal' H4 bulbed units.

Given you should be able to stop in the distance you can see, then even if you lose all illumination you should be able to stop before getting catastrophically off-course. And having gathered wits (and changed pants perhaps) continue home using the fog-lights.
