New Guy With 1991 Celica Gt-r Auto

Hi All, I've recently purchased a Toyota Celice GT-R with Auto box. There are a few lights which keep appearing on the dash intermittently. One is orange and is a car with little lines at the back and appears on the right side of dash, the other is what lloks like a radiator and is red on the right side of dash - they appear at the same time and then go again!! Wiring fault maybe???

Also, what does the MANU and PWR buttons below the auto stick do?? And theres a little red button to the left of the stick with japanese writing on it - what the heck does that do??!!

Any help appreciated!

Also looking for a new parcel shelf if anyone knows where theres one free to good home or very cheap!! lol! ;)

Welcome to the club,

right from the begining

The manu button means you can use the gears as you would in a manual.

the power button gives you an extra kick with the speed when you need it eg over taking but I keep mine on alllllll the time. the little button with Jap writting for...

shoooot cant bleedn remember

But I do have some very good advice for you.... if the little oil can lights up red DONT IGNOR IT put some more oil in, its way cheaper than buying a new engine.

But anyway that is as far as my knowledge goes. considering I just blew up my engine

peeps will be along to help witht the other questions mate.

excellent choice of car.

Cheers for the info Asha - Just one question - what if neither the manu button or pwr button is pressed down?? Is it just standard auto then?! Sorry for sounding thick but wanna make sure I'm driving it to the max!! Still need to know what all the little lights are for though cos I'm a bit worried about them!

my advice would be to keep the pwr button pressed all the time you never know when you might need it. B) best get those other ligts checked out by your local garage just to be on the safe side mate.

Ok, I've been reading some of the posts on here and am getting REALLY confused as to what car I actually have!! It has the little red button so does this mean its a 4 wheel steer??! It hasn't got a 2ws switch near the steering wheel but it has got MANU and PWR buttons! Its a 91 on a H Plate Celice GT-R Auto - nothing on it says its has 4WS! HELP!! Do I or don't I fiddle with the red button?? Does mine have sports mode as well as the PWR switch near the gear stick??!

dont touch the little red button with the Jap writting on, there is no need to, she doesnt have the sports mode if you cant find the sports mode button (same as mine)I think it was an extra when brand new.

It is a four wheel steer and have you got an O/D button on the gear stick? keep that pressed in at all times.

go the the Celica Club website and they will help out a bit more.loads of GT-Rs on there.

Cheers Asha! Yeh I have the overdrive button pressed in at all times. Don't think I'll drive it with the PWR button pressed all the time - uses loads more fuel! So I definitely have 4ws steer then??! whats the celice club website address??

Thanks for that maleborn - theres some good information there!! I'm still not convinced I have 4WS though - nothing on the car to say I have it or any switches! Is there a way to check? If I get the engine numbers from in the negine compartment can I cross reference them somewhere??

there was 2 types ever made , the st182 which hasn't got 4ws .and the st183 which has the 4ws , the cars themselves are exactly the same apart from the 4ws. also it should have a Badge on the back stating 4ws

Dude.

Red Button. To do with Auto overide. I can remember reading it in here somewhere. I think so it can be started in the nuetral?? or allow it to be shifted to 1st without starting but freeweelin?? dam,..I cant remeber the specific. But,....

Man- as stated by others. Give manual control of 1+2 if your on ice, paticularly going uphill when the auto choke is on on cold mornings. You might wanna try this, instead of snaking the back end against your neighbours cars ( who are already jealous, cus you have a GTR)

PWR- adjusts the power band shift point. With PWR selected the shift doesnt come untill around 4700-5800 rpm aprox. And as you have found. When the GTR hits 4666 rpm The Beast within Awakes. Isnt it just a differnt ride man. Wahoooo (sorry)

What you got there me old china, is,...

20th Anniversary Ltd Edition 5th Generation Celica GTR 2.0 Litre Non Turbo/Non Injection/ Auto Import. Released in Dec 1990 to commerorate 20 years of Toyota Motoring Destined purely for the Japanese Market a few thousand found there way to Europe by import.

They where fitted with the 2nd Generation 3S-GE engine in a T180 Platform. Which pretty much means you got the most of it. Except the later engine and 4wd mods. U got the aircon and abs pws cl Imob etc. No cc though. But hey. Look how big that boot is.

The lights I'll double check mine tomorrow and get back to you. I was once told the red one with slashes through it is the Lambda sensor (exhaust) turned out it was the Alternator. When it died I was up S##t creek where it not for the fact that i had a spare Battery which gave me just enough charge to get home. I have many more info's and anecdotes about my GTR. Its just the Best Man. Not to much, no to little. Just right.

I Have apost about the Service manual situation. I'll post you if you get back to me and I get info.

Hope some if this helps.

JB

Why do I know this.

Because I have exactly the same (Black)

You must be the only know person in the world that ive found so far. We are absolutly s### for broke when it comes to manuals it seems. But if you get back to me I can tell you where there ae a couple of gts breakin and many of the parts fit the gtr (not found an auto breakin yet. If we hook up. we could possibly share a breaking gtr if we can find one. Im cant remeber if i can mail my e mail on here, so sorry moderator if im not allowed. Please remove if neccsary.

pugwash@maximumedge.com

Hope you get back to me. Ive had my GTR a couple of years and have replaced various things and am about to do a head refurb. Gaskets on the way (£30.00 of eBay wikid)

I still havnt managed to get a manual--dont hold your breath. Ive tried disks that say they cover it. Dont be fooled. The 3S-GE in the 5th Gen 1990 GTR was an exception and the tail end of the 3S-GE before it was changed for the 3S-FE alot of confusion has resulted.

The Red Button is so that you can move the Selector without the keys being in the car or with the Ignition on.

Try to move the Selector without the key being on, you can't move it, now press the button and it will. Basically it is so you can tow or push the car around without the keys.

Also you will find that with the engine started you can't move the Selector unless you have you foot on the brake.

And now I just seen that this thread is over a YEAR OLD - STUPID ME!!!

Oh well, someone might find it of interest - I'm just gonna go :hang: myself!

Hey,thanks. Its a year or so but i still got the notification. Thanks Calisto. By an uncanny chance. Ive just put my GTR up on eBay for 650, so strange coincidence. I just cant get round to finishing the project and I live in the city centre and also have a Toyota Estima(91) Its funny cus the dash and buttons are so similiar, the ride, unfortunately is not. On top of which, i need somthing that can take people or some building materials or I can stay over in if i go down cornwall. The Estima delivers and I just cant afford to run both If I was honest. Its more like having a loved one adopted though. God I'll miss that car. :crybaby::crybaby::crybaby: I might be moving home in the next few months. My only hope is that no one buys it and I find a house with a drive. Anyway thanks the info. I'll check my red button with the key out. I think it still does nothing, but i could be wrong. Do you still have the a GTR? Id post mine on here, but i dont know if its against the rules. I'll check first.

Anyway. Im sure the points people add are worthwhile. I learnt so much from this forum, im sure much of it dated, but non the less usefull for it.

kind regards

JB
