P0234 Avensis T25 2.2 D4D (2AD-FTV)

Hello,

I am the owner of an old Toyota Avensis T25 Station Wagon, engine 2.2 D4D 110kw (2AD-FTV). The car is 19 years old (2005) and the ODO shows fair 340 000km.

So far there werent any major troubles with the car despite the common wear and tear (bearings, axle half shafts, fuses, relays...). The car is having proper

maintenace, oil and filter changing etc. But there are two problems (don’t know if related) that bothers me, which me and other mechanicians cannot repair :

1. P0234 failure - Turobocharger overboost

So far I am getting this failure only during longer highway drives at the speed of 140km/h and only when the cruise control is in use.

Without cruise control everythign goes smooth. And it happens randomly - sometimes after driving 50km on highway, next time 100km - but always when using the cruise control

and at the speed of around 140km/h. First thing I did was checking all the hoses and wiring - but only the the area which can be visible when the hood

is open. Everything looked fine. According to the code P0234 troubleshooting I focused on the E-VRV area and next thing I did was replacing the E-VRV for the original Pierburg and

replacing the MAP sensor filter and cleaning the EGR. It did’t solve the problem, maybe prolonged the period of inducing the failure (after the replacement and cleaning it showed yet after 180km

on highway - but it may be just coincidence, because I never found any patter when and how this happens - it’s just randomly). Next I checked the turbo actuator if it moves - when I disconnect the hose from it, it’s clear

that it moves. I can’t check the turbo myself because I am not a skilled mechanician - but it seems to me that turbo works fine. I don’t see any decrease of acceleration nor delays or lags. It is just going smooth

and the performance did’t change at all since I’ve driven the car. Even the higher speeds on highways (160-180km/h) for 1 hour or more don’t induce this failure - but I don’t use cruise control at those speeds.

I know there was some bulletin EG-0018T-0809-EN which I am unable to find or download, can you someone upload it?

2. Excesive vibrations starting at 100km/h

It goes from the front, can be feeled through the steering wheel. The highest vibrations are when going straight - turnign the steering wheel reduce the vibration a bit, sometimes at all. I also

find out, that going uphill reduce the vibration, going downhill vibrates more. I changed the both front bearings, both half-axis. I have winter and summer tires and I let the shop balance them once again

and it vibrates on all of them, wheels are OK. I let several mechanicians check the front axle including suspension etc. None of them did found any failure.

I personally suspect the front ball joints or the engine mounting.

Do you have some experience with above failures? How did you solve them?

Thank You in advance for your feedback

JK

Vibration wise I had something very similar at same speeds - albeit in a different car. Tried balancing and tracking multiple times.

Then had the front suspension bushes replaced after a couple of years due tos'minor deterioration' identified at a service and the issue went away completely. No idea why it only did it at certain speeds but that was my issue. Worth checking after you've checked  tracking and balancing are both OK (Wear on bushes wasn't that bad).
