Relax Warranty Scheme - When to schedule the next service

We bought a used 2019 Corolla Tourings Sports end of last year, and it's last Toyota (full) service was done in January 2023 - having done >10,000 miles since last service.

We were told we'd need to book in an interim service for Jan 2024 - but, the Toyota dealership cancelled our appointment a week before the scheduled Jan service date.

I expressed my concern that having their next available service date in February meant we might not be covered by the yearly/10,000+ mile warranty i.e. if we had a mechanical fault between the January due date and the rescheduled Feb service appointment.

I was told we'd still be covered by the manufacturer's 5 year warranty, as our car was registered in June 2019. Even so, they recommended having the interim service rescheduled for Feb 2024 - and that's booked in for later this month.

However, given there's been much less than 10,000 additional miles on the clock since our car was last serviced in Jan 2023, would we be okay to hold off with the interim service till May, given the manufacturer's warranty expires in June 2024?

Toyota service intervals are 12 months or 10,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

So if the last service was January 2023, and has covered less than 10,000 miles since, it should be serviced on the time basis - 12 months - and the car was due a service in January 2024.

Was the car bought from a dealer (Toyota or other) or a private sale? If from a dealer, as the car was bought at the end of 2023, why wasn't it serviced at the time of sale?

Win Li, No.  The service interval 10000/one year is whichever is sooner.

You are on the 12 month zone now with a tolerance, usually, up to a month.  Keep the paperwork for your cancelled Service as evidence of your original appointment

So, even with the 5 year manufacturer's warranty, this only applies if the car is regularly serviced every 12 months or at 10,000 miles within that 5 year period?

It was from a used dealership and they would have scheduled to service it in Jan 2024, but we needed the new car to replace our old car in December.

With any new car warranty regardless of marque, whether it is 5 years/100,000 miles, 3 years/60,000 miles, etc, it is subject to the car being serviced according to the manufacturer's service intervals.

Okay, thanks Mike. Will try to get the Toyota dealership to provide an email acknowledgement to say they cancelled the scheduled January service, and offered an alternative date in February.

Hopefully this will be enough to continue the Relax warranty for another 5 years, so long as we keep to the yearly servicing schedule (as we're very unlikely to do >10,000 miles each year).

Thanks for your advice Roy. Will try to get the Toyota dealership to confirm in an email that the break in the yearly service schedule was down to them cancelling, and having it slightly delayed shouldn't affect our rights when it comes to the ongoing warranty scheme.

The Relax extended warranty can be instigated either when the new car warranty has expired, or when the new car warranty is near expiry. Clarify with the Toyota dealer that, when the service is done in February, they will confirm Relax will be in place from the date of the February service.

Correct.

According to the terms, that warranty is voided if the service schedule is not adhered to - There is some scope for extenuating circumstances, like what happened during lock down, so make sure you get any thing like that in writing from the dealer.

 

The Relax warranty is separate, and gives 1 year or 10k miles worth of warranty cover from the day of the service, and has no dependency on prior services. In theory you could not service the car for 5 years, then service it for year 6 and it would still get the 1 year/10k warranty for that year, although any problems caused by it not being serviced for the first 5 years would not be covered.
