5000 miles in my cross

I can’t believe I’ve done just over 5000 miles since I picked it up last July, I’m still liking it very much, a few things though, now winter is coming to an end and it’s getting lighter, I won’t need to use the high beam assist which seems to have a mind of its own, I personally think it could do with more range as it doesn’t always extinguish if it sees car lights coming towards you if it’s some distance away or brake lights , again, if it’s a way in front, not sure if it can be recalibrated, I’ve even had it flash once or twice which could be misleading to other road users or pedestrians, I’ve only forgotten to use the fuel filler flap lever once so far, the ford easyfuel system was so much better and it’s like I’ve gone back 20 years having to undo the cap, no big deal I know but it seems a bit outdated, fuel economy is picking up now it’s slightly warmer and it will be interesting to see if I can beat the 68mpg now it’s got a few more miles on, I have said before that I don’t find it excessively noisy but I don’t think the falken tyres fitted from the factory help, it’s not a brand I’ve used before and wouldn’t be my first choice, so, quite pleased with my choice in going for my Yaris cross…

The mpg in mine has climbed a lot lately - I am starting to think the winter-summer fuel mixes are playing some part in this too, as I've literally regained 8mpg right after refuelling, while the temperature hasn't changed that much to explain it.

Eh?

Today is 11th Feb. We're still 5-6 weeks away from the official beginning of Spring let along Summer!

Why would fuel companies have changed to their summer mixture when it's still winter?

No, I we visited relatives on Christmas Eve which was only a short journey then left the car unused for two days, the Battery went flat when I wanted to use it, ( going to work, typical) and had to call Toyota assist who jump started it, it’s been fine ever since though..

Look at the attached spec sheet for E10 unleaded.  The seasonal change over dates are near the bottom of the page.

The quoted dates are for petrol leaving the oil company supply depots.  It may take a short time to filter through to what you buy at your local forecourt pump depending on how often they get supplied.

It doesn't matter what those dates are, I just want to know how people know what mixture of fuel they're putting into their tank.

If you can believe it, Mr Shell tells us he pours magical stuff in to his fuel that will clean our engines and give us more mpg. How do any of us know that Mr Shell hasn't changed the characteritics of quantities of his magical stuff from tank full to tank full? How do we know the supplier of his magical stuff bought it from Lidl because Sainsburys were out of stock when Shell were manufacturing that particular day?

Other than physical things like weather or road conditions etc, how can any of us point at something we don't know about and say that's the culprit?

( I should be asking that question to Donald Trump as he seems to have made a career out of it. 🤣

I have noticed recently that when the outside temperature is above 10 degrees the engine goes into EV mode more often.

I use fuels from all the major suppliers, I don't think there is much to choose between any of them and the mpg is much the same.  I have also used 99 octane.  That definitely makes the engine quieter and smoother and may give a few more mpg, but the better fuel consumption does not cover the extra cost, I use it because the car is nicer to drive.  Currently I have a tank of Asda petrol, a rarity for me.  My mpg is down but that is due to the large number of short journeys I have done recently on a cold engine.   Over the years I have found Tesco unleaded to be as good as good as any other giving good mpg throughout the year.

One thing I have noticed is that since the introduction of E10 my winter mpg drops considerably, a lot more than it used to drop.  Summer mpg seems to be much the same as it was before E10.
