I’m trying to getan idea of the lifespan of the 12v Battery. I realise this will be dependant on many thing but I’m just trying to get an idea. My car is four years and eight months old and has done 9100 miles an idea of how old other members batteries have lasted would be useful to me.

thanks.

A 12v Agm Life span is 8-10 years, But lockdown has been a major factor

Change it (if) when you start having problems - i.e. if it goes completely flat or you start having to jump with a booster.  Depends on how it's been treated, it's not really a "fit and forget" item these days.

A little over two years for me. At least, after today's mishap, when I needed to call out the start up brigade, after I left the car unlocked after the initial start up, for what ? maybe 20 minutes.

I just bought a starter booster as an insurance.

be aware that the MK3 hybrid uses a 12v AGM Battery these are £120-150 to replace and will last 8-10 years

The Mk4 and Cross use a EFB (calcium type) these are £50-90 with an average life of 5-6 years

the 2 batteries are very different

cars built in the lockdown period seem more susceptible to bad batteries and early failure

Ours is exactly 6 years old and has done 23,000 miles. If it's the original Battery, which I think it is, then it still seems fine. The car gets used a few times a week, but mainly shortish trips.

I don't think it is an EFB - EFBs have higher capacity and stronger degradation resistance at partial charge than normal lead acid batteries, and are essentially a budget stop-gap between normal lead acid batteries and AGM; I believe they were made as a cheaper alternative to AGM for stop-start equipped cars, with some of the performance but much less cost. My Mk2 had an EFB and it wasn't as delicate as this one seems to be, and was also a lot more expensive to replace (Although not AGM-levels)

I strongly suspect the factory Battery in the Mk4 is just a normal and very un-enhanced lead acid Battery, like we used to use in the 80's!

iirc the Battery in the MK4 is a LN spec Battery and Calcium which is typically EFB - looking  at Yuasa, they list a replacement as SMF (sealed maintenance Free) Bosch list it as a calcium SMF or EFB options

as you are aware the aftermarket is a minefield but its still sub £100 replacement

yes i agree with graham47
nobody would want to end up like this after two days
this MUTLU Battery MK4 from Toyota is laughable image.png.4be58030cdbca9fdc9598a698617a2e6.png

Yeah it's a bit confusing; I'm not totally sure what the LNx designations are - I originally thought it was just the size, but that would be redundant since we already have the numerical size designations, so maybe there is a minimum performance attributed to it too?? :confused1:

Most EFBs have calcium tech but calcium doesn't mean they are EFB - Most of our old family cars have had 12v batteries boasting calcium tech but were just normal batteries (I remember one still needed distilled water! ).

The EFB rated for my old Mk2 was £120!  And for extra confusion, that same size also had non-EFB and AGM alternatives (The non-EFB was £80-90 while the AGM was nearly £200! )! In the end I decided to not replace it, since I figured whatever fuel saving I'd get making the stop-start system work again would be dwarfed by the cost of the Battery! Curiously the Mk4 seems to have much fewer Battery options as it's just that one size and type from what I've found so far...

That is what matters !

And it would have made your statement much clearer if you’d included that in the original post.

Hi Cyker well I agree it says on the sticker maintance free calcium & i know its a twin top Battery

so its sealed from the cabin area but if its really maintance free for its working life or just between car services thats why have you see the old type of cell plugs for topping up.

Not on Yaris but on Auris hybrid 12v Battery AGM is either 8.5 or 13.5 years old, still good and probably it will outlast the hybrid Battery, which is at its end at 267000 miles, the car still drives though.

Quite.  However to my untrained eye it could suggest:

1.  One or more cells have degraded and ot might survive in that condition for some time.

2.  The low reading is 'normal' for that particular Battery.  Again it might continue for a time.

In the case of a conventional ICE the starter motor might hesitate.   In the case of the HEV that low voltage might be sufficient to energise the system.

 💡

Might just check my jumper pack output.  Time for a recharge check anyway.

PS, just checked my jumper pack.  Long time since I checked (must keep a record).  Still showing 4 LED-more than 75%- and voltage 12.63v.

My 2016 Yaris Hybrid is still on its original Battery and has covered 55000 miles.  It gets used 3-4 times a week, mainly short journeys and has not caused any problems so far.  I carry a booster in the glove box but haven't ever needed to  use it.

Had the same car/year and no issue, it has a higher quality/price AGM Battery, where as the MK4 Yaris has a MUTLU Turkish Battery or Mewtwo as a Pikachu fan calls it.
