Newbie, with some queries. First Toyota

Hi,

Just purchased my first Toyota, it is a Rav 4 2013 Invincible, 126k manual 2.2. Feel really pleased with car done around 100miles in it since yesterday all seems ok. Have some queries and would appreciate any help Car is a a little more sluggish than I was expecting, I did test drive the car but I was with an elderly gentlemen so didn't really push it, feels like its not revving freely might just be me not used to the engine etc. Can you have the mirrors fold when you lock the car?  My Autel reader cannot read the vin automatically when I enter it manually it still does not read, could be I am getting my zero' and O's mixed up. When I manually try to do it it asks me what the engine is I settled on 2AD-FTV no idea if this is right, it did throw codes which I cleared P1608 (engine lack of power) Current others were historic.

I am not a mechanic but quite willing to try suggested fixes or should I take this to a garage to have a proper scan?

Thank you

I know of others makes of cars that had been driven very sedately and the solution seems to be after a good service go out and give them a good long drive on the motorway and give it a blow out.

I believe that is correct. The 2.2 manual was described as a D4-D and had the 2AD-FTV engine.

The 2.2 auto was described as a D-CAT and had the 2AD-FHV engine - this was additionally blessed with a 4-way DPNR Catalyst and Exhaust Port Injection which made it very clean (but occasionally problematic).

Have you downloaded the Owner's Manual? (It won't help much with your issue but may be good to have.)

The zeros are oval shaped 0 and the o is circular.

Maybe a good thrashing for a few miles wouldn't come amiss. Start with a cleared memory and post the outcome. It may also be prudent to add a fuel cleaner to your tank, like Liqui Moly Pro-Line Fuel Injection Cleaner Petrol Injection System Cleaner

Sounds like it needs a few ‘Italian’ tune ups! Run a few tanks of premium fuel such as Vpower will help too.

Thank you all for the responses, it is very much appreciated and helpful. Philip42h I will download manual and thanks for engine confirmation. Bernard Foy , thanks for clearing up Vin details. GBgraham, I have just put some fuel cleaner in the tank this morning, will drive later than top up. Thanks. Flatboat, I like the idea of Italian tune up, will fill with decent fuel this afternoon.

PS I probably have not responded correctly in the forum format, just pushed for time and wanted to reply.

The wing mirrors do not fold back when you lock the car, you have to press the button on the r/h side of the dash.

Let the tank empty till you have about a quarter of a tank then put a couple of bottles of injector cleaners in and just drive it for a while.

Thank you, I have added cleaner tank is about half full, will hopefully get some miles in tomorrow and will then add more cleaner, fingers crossed it kicks it into life.

Silly answer, have you found the sports mode switch near the seat heater switches? Does improve acceleration😀

Hi, thanks yes tried this no difference unfortunately

Apologies I tried to edit my first post to add update, but failed so I have started this. Thanks to the many replies I have tried the cleaner about 500ml of Liquid Moly, I changed the air filter although previous one was clean, I have now done about 300miles there is a marginal difference, possibly wishful thinking. The car still struggles above 3000rpm it feels like its struggling for fuel or an air leak or blockage, it will go beyond 3000 but it a long haul and feels strained. Should my next move be a new fuel filter, I think I would have do have this done at a garage as I looked at the how to guides I think it would be a bit tricky for me. Car is running fine other than this, no smoke or or strange noises.

Thanks

If no fault codes are coming up I would go back to basics and the fuel filter is definitely one of them.

Further update, having gone through invoices for the car I can see Fuel Filter was changed in June last year, using Bosch parts, so unfortunately I think it would unlikely be the fuel filter. I scanned the car last night and there are no codes other than type pressure thing. Will continue to drive hard when I get the chance to see if it does help. Any other suggestions much appreciated, just for clarification it will rev above 3000 it just a struggle after that. Thanks

Update - so I have done around 400 miles so far, and in the last two days hard miles kept car longer in gear etc. But there is a definitive drop in performance around the 3000rpm mark in any gear the car will continue to move up rev range but it’s hard work and no real power. I think the cleaner has perhaps made the car quieter and smoother around town, but it’s not helping with top end performance. As previous post fuel filter was done 6 months ago, air filter has been replaced there are no leaks or other performance issues. So should I try clean MAF is this possible? Is itt possible to clean EGR? Is it likely that it is a turbo issue? Really like the car but. I need to find a fix. Any ideas much appreciated

Very difficult sat here trying to solve a problem for you if no fault codes are showing. If you can give the exact engine type may help by knowing what components are fitted to the engine. Some EGR valves don't like been cleaned but if you do try don't use any silicon cleaners but don't assume because it's cleaned that it's good. Most modern MAF sensors are solid state and unless it's clogged there is nothing that can be done. Then you will have SCV valves that may be ineffective, for this check all the vacuum pipes. Also you may have a weak turbo which is expensive.

Now is probably the time to get it plugged in for live data and to see what is happening on the road. If I have scared you enough, find a good independent Toyota mechanic/specialist and go and spend a few quid with him, it may save you a fortune and heartache.

Hi thank you for the detailed response I believe the engine is 2AD-FTV D4D 2.2 diesel manual 2013. I will try my code reader today again, now that I have driven it longer maybe something will show. Will try and have good look at the pipes on turbo also. Thanks

Well I have managed to scan car with Autel bluetooth Scanner and it has revealed a Store P1608 - Engine Lack of Power and Current P1608 - Engine Lack of Power , so not a whole lot of use, not really telling me something I didn't already know. There is no EML on,  or any other codes. I have had a look art various causes, which include EGR, Turbo, MAF, Leaky hose or possible sensor, but clearly I need a much better scanner. Any thoughts on where to start appreciated. Thanks

You are getting into a situation where guessing is not a good way to go, it will probably be pointless and also expensive.

You don't have the diagnostic equipment to retrieve live data, check fuel pressures, data for testing value's etc.

I feel you have gone as far as a DIY can and it will be a lot more effective to find an independent Toyota specialist.

Good luck though whichever way you decide to go.

Thank you, you are probably right, I will give a few more days. I can get live data from the scanner but it doesn't really make any sense to me I suppose I could try and screenshot on to here. Cheers

How about Xtool D7? I don't have it but the car nut guy said it's very good for DIY. It's bidirectional and live data stream etc..
