Hi,
Just another update of my trials, car has been to local garage who could only do a basic diagnostic due to their machine being updated, no codes were displayed. Mechanic also did a smoke test no leaks. Happy with install of EGR and Suction Valve both working. Does not think it is a turbo issue. Drove car and agreed there is s a significant issue, hopefully will get car in next week, work permitting. Found out there are two retaining bolts for turbo vacuum valve, might try this tomorrow even just to clean. It's so annoying the rest of the car is great but this is a problem.

Going to try to clean or replace the turbo vacuum valve next.

Just an update I am going to fit the a new turbo vacuum on Sunday, fingers crossed that does something. Its actually warm in Glasgow today, so tried the air con which was recharged June last year, and although button lights and screen informs it is on, it blows warm air, given it was recharged I assume this must be a condenser problem. Is Thera. relay a fuse I could check? Thanks

I wouldn't worry about the condenser for now because if the pressure of the refrigerant has dropped with say suffering a leak the system won't kick in.

Good luck with your on going diagnosis.

Hi everyone, hope the sun is out where you are. I have changed the Turbo Vacuum and the other one beside it, however I may have made a very basic error, I am not sure due to various distractions(my excuse) that I have attached the pipes correctly I took them off to check for leaks damage etc, but did not mark them. Does anyone have a diagram for this model ? 2013 D4D 2.2 my biggest worry is the two hoses from the turbo valve to the actuator vacuum is the one closest to the actuator or the one behind. I can report that in its current state the car is unfortunately driving much the same.

Thanks

Can't help with which pipe goes where but I've been following this thread with interest. Transported back to a Vauxhall Nova. Similar issue. Almost identical. Changed the MAF with a 3rd part one from eBay, then put the EGR valves in a bucket of petrol overnight and cleaned it with a toothbrush, changed the fuel filter, then swapped out the fuel pump. The latter made a big difference but not quite fixed. Still flat at higher revs. At that point I took the engine apart. Badly worn cam. Friend at a local garage put me a new cam kit on for 75 quid including fitting. This is the 90s though I was still shocked at the low cost. Problem sorted.

Let us know how you get on. My bet is on the turbo or related. Pressure loss somewhere.

Hi everyone hope you are all well, just another update . Since my last post the car has been mot’d and serviced all filters changed again, car was left with mechanics for a couple of days they have professional diagnostic machines and a very good reputation locally. Other than low air con and sometimes code for lack of power nothing else to aid diagnosis. The only thing they noticed was car pulled much better (not perfect) when cold compared to operating temp, would there be a reason for this? They smoke tested and other than a tiny leak from unrelated hose nothing. I drive the car hard from cold start this morning and it probably does pull better, still only avg 29/30 mpg. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks

I can only reiterate my post of April 7th . . .

______________________________________________________________-

Unfortunately when diagnosing an undocumented fault as in no fault codes, I'm afraid it comes down to a process of elimination, i.e. to find what it's not rather than what it is. Lack of performance and poor fuel may lead to a turbo problem.

You yourself will have to decide what to do next, trying to diagnose remotely is nearly impossible, all any of us can do is pass on experiences and/or suggestions.

I do not know the actual engine but you have just obtained the car with its fault, so has it had major work done, say where say the engine timing has been set incorrectly, it's just a thought as it wouldn't take much.

But there is a definitive drop in performance around the 3000rpm mark in any gear the car will continue to move up rev range but it’s hard work and no real power.

Peak torque is in the range 2000 - 2800 rpm - that is the rev range you'd want to use when accelerating. IIRC the car will do around 70 mph at 2000 rpm in 6th. So, why do you want the car to rev beyond 3000 rpm? It is a diesel after all ... 😉

Sounds like something sticking when hot or a temperature sensor like a thermocouple somewhere. Only thing I can think of a difference between cold and hot as the performance should be better when warmer (engine)?

Hi, thank you for replying and your point is understood, the car however does not accelerate properly or return fuel economy anywhere an acceptable amount, I have had many TD's so understand where the power is, this car unfortunatley does not have it. But again thank you for your point.

Did the RAV4s get variable geometry turbos like the Yaris D4Ds?

If so, it may be the vanes are stuck and can't open, so it provides boost at lower power but can't open for higher loads and chokes up?
