Hello all. Looking to tap into this knowledge base  i have a rav4 1994 lhd.  I need an ECU however I'm advised that there are a total of 3 parts in an ECU kit.  I have found ECU 89661 42190 but doesn't come with any parts as a kit.  Anyone advise where I can go to or help advise on what I should  be looking for

why does it need an ecu ?

Can I ask why you need another ECU?  Why can't you use the part number from the original ECU, if you are looking at a secondhand one it will need the keys or find an unlocked or have it done by the many companies around. A new one will be a fortune and it will need coding in at more expense, as for 3 kits, never come across this terminology

I suspect the "three" is referring to the engine ECU, body ECU (SAM?) and the speedo cluster. If you use second hand bits you have to replace all because they are locked to each other when the car is built. You cannot just replace one of them without recoding.

If you replace all then you also need the keys that go with it, as mentioned above.

What is wrong with your ECU? Often they can be repaired for a few quid. It does depend on the damage.

Thank you.. I'll have to play the blonde card:-)

Car does not start and was identified as requiring a replacement  ECU. I'm not knowledgeable to challenge what the mechanic tells me

Hi.  Yes. I've got the part number off the ECU that was removed. So made a start in trying to understand what I need to do next

Is the mechanic a Toyota guy?

"Needs and ECU" is not what I would call a proper tale. If he thinks it needs one then you need to know why he thinks that.

Did you get the fault codes from him?

There are plenty places in the UK to get the ECU tested, repaired if required and decoded, i.e. to bypass the immobiliser. Take your pick from the Google pages.

I used these people for years until I retired in 2009, they were about 95% able and reliable.

rarely will an ECU fail, I take it you have tried to start the car with a spare key

if it is a 1994 rav4 it will not have an immobilizer at all, I would pull any codes with the paperclip test

Edit. The Rav didn't have an immobilizer until 04/1995

do you have any fobs or odd-looking keys on your car keys?

@Mjolinor sam's are a merc thing and the Germans love to overcomplicate matters, Toyota does not code radios, clusters, ECUs or BCMs (Toyota refer to these as B-ECUs) being 1994 its pre obd and the technology and methodology is very different
