First time I've taken my car for a service with a Toyota dealer today (bought it used last year). When I got home I noticed they had charged me to replace the key fob Battery. In fact, they charged me for both sets of key batteries even though I had only one with me! Also, I know they hadn't replaced the Battery of that one because I had marked it with a permanent marker pen. £9.15 was added to the invoice for this service item. I forgot to check this while I was there . They said bring the car back to them but it means a 30 mile round trip for me so I asked for refund instead for this amount. Now awaiting a call back from the service manager just to try to get a refund. Not a good experience so far.

Update, at least they've now refunded me .

Well, if that’s true you should really go back no matter how far is the garage and talk to the branch manager, ask for extra reimbursement or free next service. If me this is what I would do at least and if not getting anything in return will write straight to Toyota head office.

Whoooaa it's fraud, tell them so. Name and shame them.

Write to Toyota UK regarding your experience with this garage.

True, no excuse however it's probably a breakdown in communication,  at least that's what they will say (Mandy Rice Davies refers).

You book it in for a Service, their T&Cs probably say xxxx service plus key fob Battery change.

You pick up the car and pay what was booked.

One garage used to charge me for a bottle of washer fluid but leave the part empty bottle in the car.  I wised up to this and topped up washer, brake fluid and coolant before hand.

I had a friend who was absolutely anal about this.

Before taking a car in for service he would mark every nut or bolt that should have been undone during the service, he would even unscrew the oil filler cap slightly so he could tell if it had been removed and replaced or not.

He was proven right on most occasions when he checked after receiving it back.

One of the reasons why my car is only left in the control of someone else when it is being MOTd.

My Mercedes were maintained by engineers.   They would pick up and deliver.  Before driving off they would put a can of something in the oil- flushing or cleaning I guess.

Never a doubt on the Service and they bought the last car off me.

This is just to show the converse to the original article. I took my car in recently for its annual service (which I pay monthly - therefore no extra cost this time) and in the envelope with the invoice, there were two NEW free key fob batteries!! A first for me, anyway! Thanks FRF Toyota in Cardiff.

That's good news for me possibly! I get mine serviced at FRF in Newport (used to be Marshalls) though I didn't get any free batteries with the 2 yr service a month ago!

Just had my 40000 service at Toyota fixed price of £370. Invoice list included Battery transmitter (1) @ £3.80 plus VAT

My dealer used to do batteries at the service but I noticed last time that they charge.

You can do it yourself.   My YC batteries are CR2450 and Amazon do 2 Duracell for £5.

Very 2 years the remote fob Battery ie 20,000 / 40,000 miles service the fob Battery is included in the service schedule with Toyota so it should be included in the service price.

Many (many, many) years ago a work colleague took his Austin Metro to a small garage for a service and was told he needed the shock absorbers replaced. Now if it had been a later model or I think the sports version then replacing the front shock absorbers was a thing. But this was in the early 80s and a bog standard Metro so all he needed was to have the suspension pumped back up.

Luckily for him he couldn't afford the work at the time the car was there so I was able to stop him shelling out. In this case though the answer was to go to a dealer because they were often the only ones with the pump.

I have a service plan and at the last service the fob Battery was changed but because I’d only took one fob they had left a new Battery in the cup holders. They had also fitted a new fab Battery the previous year. I always stop the fab looking for the car when parked up for any length of time so don’t think the battery would be getting low.
I don’t know if the fob battery is part of every service but it appears to be at my mail dealer.
