2010 Auris Hybrid. 92500 miles.

EGR (etc) blocked.

Asking for the communities advice, on the most cost effective way to get past this:

A) Cleaning route - is it worth the return on time & energy. Is there a 'Proper' way to clean it Vs the 'typical/rushed way'.

B) It seems in the US, toyota were covering this fault as a recall (video below).

He says there is a specialised kit/pack that included the valve & gaskets that's significantly cheaper than buying bits separately. Is this the case in the U.K?

C) Inlet manifold - Clean or replace? Whats the most prudent option.

We will be keeping this car for another 2/3 years at most.

Basically, I need to get past this issue & I'm hoping for any wisdom that fellow members are willing to share.

My sincere thanks to any willing to contribute.

As the mechanic in the video also mentions, even changing the egr with a new one, the problem will not be solved as it will be filled with smoke again, it's just that instead of 6 months it will happen in 9-10 months I have read in various posts that the fact that this valve often fills does not mean that the valve is to blame, the problem is very factorial

In my own car after cleaning it many times and getting annoyed, I decided to remove it completely, (2 years ago) and so now it seems that the problem is probably solved I note that on my car it is easier to remove this part than on your model Again, I think it's in your best interest to clean it yourself if you're into it and have basic knowledge by following the steps from tons of videos on the internet

Update A:

@ 11:00 in video

He mentions Toyota DID cover this fix under warranty.

@ 15:10 in video

Toyota covered EGR &!related software update

@16:08 in video

Toyota TSB doesn't say anything about removing and cleaning the cooler

@17:40 in video

Toyota TSB gives the part number for a kit that is significantly cheaper than buying parts separately.

@Parts-King Can u advise on this please?

Hi,

if you search you will find a lot of information and pictures available  in various different posts regarding egr on Auris hybrid.
Cleaning is all you need, it’s not a rocket science, but it takes time and removing the cooler is a tricky process. Properly done job takes a whole day.
Replace all rubber gaskets is best and use original Toyota.
I had done these procedures twice, first at 140k miles and then at 240k. Next one will be 340k if I ever get so far.
Here is covered most common information about diy service on these cars including egr. Next will be a hybrid Battery replacement, something I am planning to do in near future.

@TonyHSD, @Parts-King

Thank you for replying.

I have spoken to a number of people that have cleaned the EGR only to say that 6 months later - the same fault occurred.

My Goal: To find out why.

I think the community needs to see this:

Why EGR cleaning often fails

I would appreciate opinions on this.

It seems there is a proper way of cleaning these valves + a wrong way.

Want to get it right first time.

I'm not an expert, however one thing to note is the burnt on carbon in these valves is toxic, make sure you wear suitable gloves and face covering, you don't want to be breathing in that gunk. Carb/EGR cleaner is readily available to buy online or in car spares shops, Holts and Wynns do it I'm sure

Does the engine burn oil? This would find it's way back to the egr system. Apparently there was a redesign of the inlet manifold and firmware update to even out the egr flow through the small passages in the manifold and try to prevent them blocking, don't know when but probably 2013 - 2015. Others will probably know more than me about it but it could be worth checking whether this has been done if the car is before that date
