PHEV: "Charging Interupted [3]" message.

Lately this has been happening more frequently. The car is set to charge but thew charging is interrupted and I get said message in the app. But what does an error code [3] mean specifically?

In the winter time I thought that it might be due to show getting into the charge port (although it, in combi with the charging cable, really should be sealed from the elements. But last night there was no snow. Only a wee bit of water around the port.

Using a "Granny Charger" with switchable AMPs set to 16 amps connected to a professionally installed outlet rated for 16 amps continuously (IEC).

Not had this while I've had the car but then I fashioned a cover over the charging port/cable to keep the weather out.  Frankly though I'd think it would need to be very excessive water/snow to cause a failure. I wonder if you've experienced a very short dip/loss of power which triggered the interrupted charge condition?

I have had the same issue but I can't tell you if I had an error code because I didn't look, I just had the message on my app saying that the charge had been interrupted. I know a couple of forum members have had the same issue and I would maybe assume as #Ernieb said about a power loss or dip in voltage may be the reason. If you are a 100% sure your electric supply is good and the fault persists it maybe a good idea the have the car checked at the dealer.

Are you using a vehicle charging point or granny charger? If the former have you done a system reset? We have a Hive charger that recommends a reset every 6 months.

Granny Charger with switchable amp settings (6, 8 10, 13 and 16).

I suspect a dealer would always point to potential faults with the third party granny charger, without you being able to replicate it on the supplied 10 amp power supply. Have you tried it using the OEM granny charger, or a charging point.

Only way I know that charging can be interrupted is power supply fails or if the car is unlocked. Although the plug should be locked into the socket during charging, maybe it can still be moved enough to break the connection. Have you tried that? Never had it on mine with effect of wind/rain/snow/etc. but maybe if a cat or something is "playing" with the cable?

PS. I don't think the 3 is a particular fault code.

Just as a test, can I suggest you try it on a lower amperage, say 10amp. Do you use the car's timer or are you just plugging in for it to start charging straight away? Also as suggested, use your OEM granny lead which you can plug in any 13amp supply, I'm not sure where you're based but sockets are normally on breakers rated at 16amp or 32amp on a ring main.

Actually, the 3 might have some relevance. I looked at my digital version of the manual and there are three messages in the troubleshooting tables at the bottom of the charging section with the same phrase but with a 1, 2, or 3 in brackets (although not "Charging Interrupted" but similar terminology). The (3) basically points to an issue with the power source so no further help than suggestions so far, but it might be worth looking in your version of the manual.

No cats and dogs around. In Denmark, the Granny OEM charger doesn't come with the car. Only the cable for public charging stations.

The car is now set to charge auto "in car". However, sometimes, I create a charge plan for a single charge in the app as well.

Only thing I found was the the numbers refer to the kind of charger you are using. Care to share your manual and page number?

  • 2 weeks later...

Follow-up : I noticed I had two identical charge plans on the same days. Deleted and now only have the original for Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Car can't seem to treat two identical plans as one. Seems to have done the trick.

I had mine fail twice again last week for no apparent reason, mine is set at everyday for 2am. I just happened to be awake for the second one and it just didn't start even though I was watching on the app.  Like a sad person and after the bathroom call I went out a switched it on manually and it fully charged.

No idea why it doesn't switch at a whim but problems since.

Another weird thing: I set mine for departure at 05:55 AM, however, the car finishes charging at 04:00? Nothing major, just a weird thing (cause the pre-heating will be sort of wasted. I leave at 08:00. The 05:55 is to benefit from cheaper tariffs on electricity. Almost as if the car can't plan how long it needs to charge to full and finishes too early. I have the charging amps set to "max" in thew car - but I can "only" draw 16 amps continuously. But it shouldn't be necessary to set it for 16 manually...
