Treesap/grease film winscreen

Recommended Posts

Good evening all

Just drove my baby IQ in the rain and there’s either treesap or a grease film on the windscreen and visibility is very bad just about can see through the windscreen. I went to my local Halfords brought Glym windscreen polish followed the instructions on how to use the product. Went back out in the rain again few hours later and that disgusting mess is still there any help on what I can use to get rid of it?

any suggestions or tips?

regards

I used to use Autoglym Fastglass. I have since discovered Gtechniq G6 Perfect glass.

autoglym glass polish is a good product so windscreen should be clean. Think you need new wipers.

Sounds like you need a "deep clean" of the windscreen.

1. Apply a strong degreaser. Something like this: https://www.car-chem.com/shop/total-clean. Beware this will strip any wax etc, on the paint so apply carefully and rinse thoroughly.

2. Bar Keepers Friend (BKF). https://www.therange.co.uk/household/cleaning/cleaning-products/multi-purpose-cleaners/powders-and-pastes/bar-keepers-friend-original-powder-250ml/#637251. The degreaser is alkaline. BKF is acidic so you're using a different chemical type to further clean off the muck. If you're old enough you might remember pink "Windowlene" and that's the sort of consistency of the paste you make up with it. You can get it ready mixed but that's just paying for someone else to put water in it. Apply in a circular motion, leave to dry and buff off. A little spritz of water helps if it's difficult to remove. Again rinse thoroughly as it won't do your wax any favours.

3. Finish with a "glass cleaner" - something like https://www.diy.com/departments/nilco-professional-reflective-surfaces-glass-cleaner-1l/1136760_BQ.prd.

Wiper Blades will benefit from a clean too and may well need replacing if they are too contaminated and/or worn.

Let us know how you get on.

Good Luck.

Andy

I was going to suggest nail varnish remover, so great minds.

I had very hard, transparent drops on my body work.  I think sap from lime or fir.  Worked a treat, so @Bper's advice will work.  Just don't sniff it.

Take care if using nail varnish remover as this may well be acetone based, not Iso propyl alcohol based. It's a different chemical base which may have different effects on paintwork. It's possible that acetone will soften or destroy the clearcoat on your paint. Shouldn't be an issue on glass.

With IPA or acetone you do not remove chalk or minerals. It will only dilute geasy based stuff.

I used a lot different glass cleaners in my life but nothing beats a treatment with a glass polish.
Glass is very, very hard so dont expect to remove scratches but any contamination that is sticked to the glass will be gone with polish. It will leave a good cleaned surface.

Also, check your washerfluid.. some fluids can cause mears, mist, fading, etc..

Whatever you do, avoid using one of those green nylon scouring pads - even gently. Glass may be hard, but those pads will scratch it badly.

I used a clay bar on the windscreen with great results. I use the bilt Hamber medium clay but any would do the job. My coach windscreen at work was like your windscreen and was totally transformed after claying. Just make sure you keep the windscreen well lubricated while claying

Hi John, I was surprised when we first brought this elbow grease and how well it works around the home but haven't tried it on the car windscreen yet.

It strange with all these products,we had being buying bleach for donkeys years and used it mostly on the toilets. We live in a very hard water area and the toilets suffer from the hard waterline at the back of the pans. We decided one day when we couldn't remove the waterline despite using loads of bleach to try a cut lime.

After rubbing it on the line it came up like new, now we use them all the time for kitchen sink etc. Many of these old methods really work and are cheap to use We have not brought bleach since.😀

I have a clay sponge that i use for the windscreen after the handwash. Use the car shampoo to lubricate.
Bit amazing every time to feel how much ´things´ are sticked to the glass.

Flash is the best thing for that and it's cheap because it doesn't have "car" written on the bottle.

You're soooo right. I'd go further and recommend the Aldi version. It's even cheaper, because it doesn't have 'Flash' written on the bottle.

@FROSTYBALLS - It's REALLY bugging me that the word 'windscreen' in the title of this thread is missing a letter. Can you do something about it before I go and run under a bus?

Here's a 'd' if you've run out of them.

When a topic title is edited to remove shouting, the OP's spelling is kept as posted, whether correct or not.

Yes I can change it.

I think a winscreen is what most of you have on your computers. Personally I have a linuxscreen.

I've got a Mac. It hasn't got a screen, but I wouldn't be without it in the rain.

Not here to edit posts, which in itself would be a full time role. Please return to the topic subject.
