Yaris CVT ratio

Hi, our Yaris CVT mk3 always ran very smoothly at town speed but now at around 20-30mph it sounds like as if it is in the wrong gear. You can increase speed and it feels fine again but I'm not sure whether the revs are just too low...it was never like this before a couple of months ago. Its also fine when driven from cold as the car revs a little higher until its warmed up. Any idea what could have caused the change?

First question: Is your car a hybrid or not?

as the name suggests (CVT) its a Constantly Variable Ratio, if it is a hybrid the characteristics change in the colder months

if it's the standard CVT is it a 1.33

AFAIK, all Yarises sold from 2014 onwards are hybrid?

If this is the case, see Bob's post above...

they did the multidrive (CVT) 1.33 up to 2017* then swapped to the 1.5 up to 2020 these cars are not that common

2018 (2nd facelift)

No, mine, 2014 pre facelift MkIII is a 1.33l Petrol type motion lotion Multidrive (C.V.T.).

Sorry, Bob already answered. Note to self, read all the posts first!

ours is petrol auto non-hybrid TR CVT

I may have to book into Toyota for a diagnostic.

if the car seems 'out of correct gear' it looks like the 'gear' is too high for the revs. or the revs are too low for the gear. not sure what the issue is...its only around the 25-30mph range

i know a cvt doesn't have actual gears so assuming something is not controlling the revs appropriately?? As i said its fine when cold as a car revs higher when you first start in the morning.

When was the gearbox last serviced? I guess my question should be, when did it have a its last FULL service? (I'm thinking transmission oil)

if it only does short runs get it out on the motorway and get some heat in the engine and gearbox CVT fluid and filter change is recommended at 60K miles

if you are running it on cheap/supermarket fuel fill her up with some premium and/or a bottle of injection cleaner

Pull the plugs and check them over 60-80k miles is about right for a set of plugs

you know I asked them when they changed the sparks and they said at 60K which was a few years ago...but i don't trust the dealers now...im guess it could be that

Even more pedanty alert. Flash actually said:

Which as far as the last word is concerned is absolutely correct - a CVT has CVR.

Third pedant alert

CVT is a constantly variable ratio as stated initially. 🙂

Nowt wrong wi that.

Had he said CVT "stand for" constantly variable ratio then I would have concurred but he was merely explaining what it was so therefore the statement needs no correction.

One could of course be pedantic and say he missed an apostrophe in "it's". 🙂

Sorry, I'll get mi coat.

I'm wondering if my CVT fluid should be worth changing at 10 years? Not reached 60k miles, more like 40k.

Nobody have any suggeschuns. It is a kwestchun. Never got a degree in anything.

In answer to my question, reluctantly booked in at a main dealer for CVT fluid change. Reasoning - hopefully, it will be carried out correctly and using the right fluid - Toyota branded.
