Hi all,

Would be grateful for your thoughts. I have a 1.6 petrol manual auris (2014) engine 1zr fae. Low mileage but cylinder lost compression and needs new engine. I suspect prev owner did not maintain the car

Can get an engine for £600-700. Am shopping around for a garage to do it. It’s a relatively simple 4 cyl naturally aspirated engine.

Considering I may get the gaskets/oil seals replaced and clutch maybe also, what would be a reasonable total price?

The car is already cat s so I’m debating if it’s even an economical repair

Hi

if the car is in good shape and rust free then you can source an engine from eBay or scrap yards and put it in. Or perhaps find a mechanic who can do that for you.

If you source the engine and after paying for it to be fitted the replacement engine is found to be knackered the garage who fitted it for you would not be responsible for removing said engine and then fitting another. That would be down to you and any extra costs would be up to you to claim of the place where the engine was bought.

On the other hand if you simply get a trusted garage to source an engine and fit it should it be rubbish that is their problem to sort.

So are you feeling lucky.

Personally I have bought 2 Ford 2 litre Mondeo engines from write offs, one cost £100, one cost £150. Both proved to be fine in fact the £100 engine was eventually removed to fit a brand new replacement (complicated story) and is still under my bench.

Costs were not an issue for me since I was doing all the spannering myself.
