Yaris Cross Excel

Hello folks,

I am currently giving serious thought to getting a Yaris Cross and am wondering if anyone can offer any pointers as to what to look out for please.

From what I can see there is no spare wheel with these cars and so I am wondering if there is room for a spacesaver in the boot without it taking up too much space.

Does anyone know what Satnav is used in the car.  Is the mapping etc easy to update when updates becaome available.  I currently have a Peugeot 2008 GT which uses TomTom and which I find to be excellent.  However, updating is quite a drawn-out process with this system.

Do the wing mirrors dip when reverse gear is engaged?

Does the MPG live up to the manufacturers stated figures?

Many thanks for any input.

I think you can fit a spacesaver afaik, but someone on here will be able to clarify, I seem to remember that it is Tom Tom for the sat nav, but again, someone will be able to clarify, no the mirrors do not dip when you select reverse but you can get it with the city pack which comes with a surround view camera, which you can add for £100 if buying new, it does reduce the screen size a little bit but I’ve found it doesn’t really affect anything..mpg is excellent but it does take a dip in colder weather, atm I’m seeing high fifties, but it drops to low/mid fifties as the temperature drops, when I got mine in summer I easily got high sixties..

Product Quantity Price

Toyota Yaris Cross 2021 Onwards Space Saver Wheel Kit (#See Description for listing.) 1 £248.63

Subtotal: £248.63

I bought from Toyota parts direct. The space saver came with all the necessary parts ie jack, wheel brace and fitting kit. Very pleased with mine.

You can buy cheaper but when I took that route with my aygo the wheel was fine but it came with a generic kit which didn't fit and rattled about in the boot.

Ps having sold the aygo 2 years ago, I kept the wheel and it makes an excellent stop on the garage floor because it doesn't move when I use it to position my YC just short of the end wall

The non-City pack version has over the air map updates.  These are free for the first 3 years.  I have seen this in the MyToyota App but can't find it now.

The spare wheel fits below the lower boot.  I have not checked the depth  but a full size wheel  (your punctured wheel) may lift the lower boot floor.  I didn't do it but, rather than a space saver, you might be able to get a 5th road wheel and use it in a 5 wheel rotation..

I get high 50s in winter and mid 60s in summer.

A short morning run of 2-3 miles gets 40+.  Yesterday my wife got 49 out and 75 back over 2 three mile trips, 63mpg at a steady 26mph average.

Thank you for the valued input chaps, much appreciated.

I am not a fan of the tyre repair kits and have always got a spacesaver wheel with each of my cars.  I think that it gives more peace of mind.

@FROSTYBALLS, I can't seem to get anything from your link 'HERE' in your reply.

Not a  link, it is the brand of mapping - HERE Technologies !  Owned by a consortium of car manufacturers (Audi, BMW & Mercedes).

Sorry!  I misunderstood.  Some people often use 'HERE' as a link.  Thank you for explaining.

I fell into that trap too.  I think Mike should get lines for that.  It’s like saying - when I nod my head you hit it.

Worth pointing out that only the 2WD can take a spare wheel, no room for it in the AWD Yaris Cross.

Thank you for that Peterd23, useful info.  Is the AWD available on each of the specs or is it just on the top of the range model?

I have set my sights on an Excel as seems to stand at about the mid-point between the entry level (Icon?) and the top of the range (Premier ?).  have I got that right? The top spec is beyond my budget.

There is room for a spare wheel in the AWDi...but it takes up a bit more of the boot.

Hi Geoff.,

Just bought a Yaris Cross  4WD  .  I am pretty sure that you can get a spacesaver in the back. There is a plastic tray in at the moment which could come out making space for the spacesaver.  I have a feeling the electronics will adapt to you connecting a Tom Tom, though the built in nav seems to be reasonable.

Good luck with it.

I haggled when purchasing and asked what they would do to "sweeten the deal." Got the spare tyre kit for nothing. If you don't ask, you don't get!

Has anyone compared the Yaris Cross with the Lexus UX ?

I've had 4 Lexus cars in the past and changed to the Peugeot 2008 GT in November 2021.  Since then I've lost touch with Lexus

I'm now tempted to go back to Toyota and having spotted the UX today has thrown me into confusion!!!

I think you just confused him because this thread is about the Cross and not the normal Yaris

With the trims, I'm not sure if it's still the case, but at least originally the trims in order of increasing 'stuff' were Icon, Design, Dynamic and Excel for the Yaris and Yaris Cross. Under the new naming scheme, Icon was always the base spec and Excel the top spec, with variously randomly named ones in between. Now it's all over the place, with GR Sport replacing Dynamic in some cases and being side-ways in others, and Premiere being added above Excel!

Personally I miss the old T2 T3 T4 T-Spirit convention - The order was more obvious, and then they could have special editions that stood out more like T-Sport, Colour Collection etc.

I can absolutely categorically dismiss the myth that you can get a wheel in the wheel well of an AWD, even a spacesaver.  You can get it on top of the deck but you can get all sorts on the deck, it just fills the boot.  I know someone that does just that.

I’ve gone from a Cross AWD to a UX AWD.  The UX is more of an SUV and has a lot of things going for it.  The UX is very sumptuous and flies if you push it.  It’s about to get the V5 powertrain which with a high powered rear axle drops the 0-60 to under 8 seconds and with the same tuning as the Cross gets 55mpg which we know means a lot more.  If fit and finish is important to you, there’s always the LBX.  It’s only the lack of cooled seats that stops me ordering one of those.

My Toyota has a full diameter but narrow space saver.  The first SAAB I had with a space saver was a true space saver; it had a smaller radius and a narrow thread.  It was also a bright orange/scarlet.  The car handled OK upto 50kph.  It was a right illegitimate issue putting the full size flat in a car full of people and luggage though they helpfully provided a large plastic bag.

Could you use a similar small diameter space saver?

I've had a CT , NX and a UX..the Lexus cars are definitely more luxurious, and they certainly make you pay for that, including the dreaded luxury road tax bracket !         The UX to me isn't an SUV...it's more of a small car, albeit the MY24 , does sound like it's been given a larger rear motor...which should be interesting. I changed to an YC in March 2023...I reckon it feels more spacious inside, not as luxurious obviously..but suits my needs.  I placed an order for the LBX, but the Original edition, doesn't come in the AWDi variant...and the car I specced up, fell into the additional luxury tax bracket. So I've just placed an order for the YC Premiere model AWDi, looking forward to the very slight increase in power and reduced noise?
