Could you use a similar small diameter space saver?

You mean the rim diameter or the outer tyre diameter? If the latter IMO it would totally mess up the safety systems 😐

It was the outer tyre.  It looked very odd and it drove front right down.  As SAABs of the time were at the forefront of safety I think they assessed it as safe.

As some cars do have room for a full sized wheel, why do they use space savers?

The SS is an additional inventory cost.  It may however have a lower weight and thus effect regarding kerb weight, emissions etc.

Cutting out the SS as a basic item may also reduce weight and cost.

A FSW may have a lower impact on inventory costs but be more expensive for the consumer.

Compromise?  Designed for but not fitted with a full size spare?

What year specifically? 🙂

I'd say that mainly WLTP fuel consumption and emissions test, which states the car mass requirements:

Quote

2.1. Mass of the vehicle with bodywork and all factory fitted equipment, electrical and auxiliary equipment for normal operation of vehicle, including liquids, tools, fire extinguisher, standard spare parts, chocks and spare wheel, if fitted. 2.2. The fuel tank shall be filled to at least 90 per cent of rated capacity and the other liquid containing systems (except those for used water) to 100 per cent of the capacity specified by the manufacturer.

Full size spare is too wide (or tall if you lay it flat) so it steals the trunk capacity and weights a lot. Narrow spare saves a lot of space and a little bit of weight - and allows you to continue your journey no matter how damaged one of your wheels is. Repair kit is lightest and smallest but it cannot fix your tyre if it's considerably damaged. I don't think the smaller-than-regular wheel is acceptable with anything modern (I'd say last 20 years?) as ABS requires the wheels to be the same size to properly calculate if one of them starts to slip during braking. For some cars (my Focus is one example) even allowed to replicate some of the modern TPMS functionality by counting number of rotations on each wheel. If they differed considerably, it raised an error indicating that one of the wheels might be flat, which decreases it's outer diameter.

There is another way, though. Run-flat tyres 🙂

How many reversing lights does the Excel have?  So may cars today only have one reversing light and one rear fog light.

One reversing lamp is not very helpful when driving through very narrow lanes in Devon and Cornwall, particularly when you come up against oncoming traffice and have to reverse, even worse when it's foggy and damp and visibility is rubbish.

That's why reverse cam is there 🙂

Not a lot of illumination from that though.

I find the reverse cam bright enough, it helps with the all round view I have on mine

The one thing that has become evident , the depreciation on the UX is horrendous.

A chap on the Lexus forum paid £48k, for his UX....and four months later...his Lexus dealer offered him a trade in price of £23k...that's a depreciation of £6250/month.

His pasted quote below;

"Anyway, getting back to valuations and mine was for our 4 month old car was £23k, so a loss of 25 grand, It's just ridiculous, on that basis I will wait six months and buy a second hand LBX for virtually nothing!"

Depreciation is always going to be a problem as it's not a popular car, but nobody can use figures over such a short time scale as this with any accuracy - it's the same for any mass production car that's not in demand after 4mth, especially back to a main dealer. If that dealer already had UX's they wanted to shift, they wouldn't want another unless there was crazy profit in it.

If you bought a £200,000 Ferarri Roma and after 4mth the dealer offered you £1 for it, does that mean to say it's depreciated £299,999 ?  Depreciation is what you actually sell the car for, not what you're offered.

I'm sure if the chap on the Lexus forum advertised the car someone who was after a nearly new Lexus for £35k, they'd snap his hand off him. What did all the car buying sites offer him?

Re: reversing lights.  I always thought a reversing light was a legal requirement to warn others that you're reversing, not to illuminate your way.  If it's so dark then surely the red tail lights will illuminate the area sufficiently?  I've never had an issue in 40 years of driving to see where I'm reversing. I'd have thought if someone was still having trouble seeing then simply switch on the rear fog?

See his reply, when I asked him below ...still shocking !!

"The figure they suggest is £29,682, so a lot better than the dealer to say the least "

He would have lost 8K worth of taxes alone, you will never get anything like a decent deal on the car after 4 months, the same applies to anything you buy new and sell after 4 months, crazy thing to do

I agree, but obviously he must have had a good reason , to want to change his UX so early. Having said that....he would have, if he accepted that offer, lost more for one month, then I am for my year old Excel Cross.

@Hind two part answer:

The mini spare was around mid-80s.

Safety was from the 99s inception with a continuous improvement of safety features starting with the safety cage and split brake system and independent handbrake.

My two Mercs, pre-2005, both had full size spare tyres but steel wheels.

I agree about boot space on a YC if you had a full size wheel, but, s*s's law, when I had to do a rush wheel change once, car fully laden plus 2 children 5 & 3 off on holiday, the flat tyre was stowed behind my seat by my daughter's feet.

He was having a proper moan and I think if they’d offered him double what he’d paid he wouldn’t be happy but of course the keyboard warriors joined in to put the boot in.  I love mine and would have another without hesitation.  Don’t care what its value is as I’m happy with it.

I can absolutely categorically dismiss the myth that you can get a wheel in the wheel well of an AWD, even a spacesaver.  You can get it on top of the deck but you can get all sorts on the deck, it just fills the boot.  I know someone that does just that.

I’ve gone from a Cross AWD to a UX AWD.  The UX is more of an SUV and has a lot of things going for it.  The UX is very sumptuous and flies if you push it.  It’s about to get the V5 powertrain which with a high powered rear axle drops the 0-60 to under 8 seconds and with the same tuning as the Cross gets 55mpg which we know means a lot more.  If fit and finish is important to you, there’s always the LBX.  It’s only the lack of cooled seats that stops me ordering one of those.

There an error that I can’t edit here, I meant to say the Cross is more of an SUV and has a lot of things going for it.

"A proper moan"  omg....he had a good right to....if he did...but he didn't, he stated the facts...depreciation is horrendous on the UX, and to say that you don't care about what the value of your car is, is really strange, and unbelievable.

I think Chris (Three5) carries the spacesaver in the boot, the tools he has underneath if I remember correctly

Funny how people put the boot in when on their keyboard and don't say boo to your face 🤦‍♂️ it's a funny old world

As long as I’m working and I’m reasonably healthy I’ll change cars whenever I’m seduced by one (which is frequently).  I’ve got no other passions, I don’t drink other than an occasional summertime barbecue beer, I don’t smoke, I don’t play golf or any other expensive hobby and I see absolutely no point dropping off my perch with a bank account full of money.  Wife and daughters are looked after in my absence so they’re ok…..  I might just phone and order a new car right now despite the appalling waste of money.  I’ve got quite a few mates that no longer have the option.  Actually, that’s being flippant but I will be going looking at the revised UX as soon as it arrives in the country which should be Easter ish.

Aye and the snipes haven’t stopped yet 😉.  You didn’t hear about Chris’s car then?   Somebody changed his spare wheel arrangements but he’s absolutely ok 👌 He’s now waiting for a LBX.
