My brother in law's retirement hobby is buying new cars.  Two years is excessive.   He cossets them but rarely travels long distances. Last year he parked in an hotel car park overnight and used cruise parking the following fortnight.

This year it will be a taxi.

What does cruise parking mean Roy?

For the avoidance of doubt, I’d rather be 40 years younger and have a mortgage to worry about but that’s one of those circle of influence, circle of concern jobbies.

He was having a proper moan and I think if they’d offered him double what he’d paid he wouldn’t be happy but of course the keyboard warriors joined in to put the boot in.  I love mine and would have another without hesitation.  Don’t care what its value is as I’m happy with it.

Keyboard warriors...can you point out any post where this has occurred?

I kinda fancy, people use this term, when they have been "called out" on their own BS?

Can some one explain the specification of the 'City pack' please.  I have seen a couple for sale with this item included but it doesn't give that much detail.  It seems that a sunroof is part of it.  I've also seen 'HUD' mentioned but haven't seen one for sale where this has been included.  Is it just an optional extra?

Thank you

Cf Airport parking.  A popular holiday for those that would rather start their holiday on day 1 rather than spend the first and last days in an airport and aircraft.

Drive to the cruise terminal,  valet parking*, board ship, proper lunch and away.

* with Valet parking you would have to hope they are happy with your solar charger mounted on the dash and also hope it is open air parking.  One at Southampton is under cover.

I now know that the Excel is better equipped than the Icon and the Design but, am I correct in thinking that the Dynamic is better still?

Still don't know what the City pack is.

Do the lines on the reversing camera indicate the width of the car.  I know that some cars do and some don't.  My Peugeot does.

The City Pack has an all round camera system and dynamic reversing lines.  To get this benefit you have the older Touch 2 Go display which is an inch less than the newer Smart Connect.

It has more hard switches on the media unit whereas the Smart Connect has only 4 the rest being soft ware.

I preferred the Smart Connect mapping but use Andoid Auto whenever I Connect the phone.

City Pack is ideal if you do more City driving and parking than distance driving

Crikey, are you getting vexed Peter 😉

I can’t really what brought the conversation about, did he fancy an LBX but wasn’t happy with his valuation or something 🤔.  Anyway, I know there were a few emotive comments about how disgraceful it was.  Car valuations have dropped significantly since the covid chip shortage.  The outrage was aimed squarely at Lexus but the same applies to JLR and the German luxury brands.  Car values are just wooden dollars unless you’re selling just like houses.  Could be a pound or a million but if you’re not selling it’s academic.  If you are changing, there’s more than one way to skin a rabbit so in my case, I did a Carwow and took advantage of dealer and loyalty contributions to get a good price on my cancelled order.  If that isn’t available, you can plat their game and have a nearly new car that has suffered the same depreciation or you can just wait because after a while, the value won’t keep dropping at the same rate so you can eventually get a much more acceptable price.  Anyway, I can tell you’re very concerned about me and so you should because these idiots in the Red Sea are forcing all shipping round Africa and that helicopter attack the was shown on just about every news channel was actually a Japanese car carrier so there’s only going to be one outcome of that and that’s higher prices of anything built in Japan.

All calm Don...I'm just a very straight talker.

I pretty much did the same when I sold my NX  , I used Webuyanycar, as the dealer couldn't beat them, price wise.  They price matched the Webuyanycar valuation , on my UX, as they were in short supply, at that time.

I pre ordered a Original Edition of the LBX....but when it came to full order day...it wasn't available in AWDi...plus I was a tad concerned, about placing a full order , without seeing or driving the LBX....although I'm sure it's going to be a cracking car.     I've ordered a Premiere Cross AWDi 130 ...but like you ..I change my car quite often...so might end up with an LBX , eventually.

I understand that they've done away with the city pack, on the MY24...all built in to the new system...just as it should be.

I’d have an LBX because it’s big enough for me and the mrs and I think with the 130 it would be superb.  I didn’t drive the demonstrator because I was with two mates who ordered them and they drove but it was definitely a Lexus sat in the back.  It’s nicer looking than a UX too but as yet, you can’t get one with ventilated seats and that was the only reason I let my Cross go.  I’d convinced the mrs she’d be ok with fabric seats but she suffered terribly in the summer which made me feel guilty.  I’m not unhappy with the UX and I bet it’s super with the version 5 drivetrain. I really think these Red Sea antics are going to have repercussions on car prices and my mates order has slipped by best part of a month so we’ll have to see how that turns out.  Existing orders should be safe pricewise.

If they have, that is good news if it gets the all round positioning.  I have not seen a City Pack in use.  I find reversing into a parking slot with Smart Connect is fine, but in 18 months have yet to master parking nose in and stopping far enough in.  I have taken to aligning with the B pillar on the next car.

It is a good-looking car...much more so than the Cross...I did spec up an AWDi version...but the one I wanted came in over £40k, but I'm trying to escape the extra luxury car, £450/year road tax..so plumped for the Cross Premiere.   I have paid the luxury tax , on previous cars....but it didn't half stick in my throat.

Best thing for the OP  to do is go on the Toyota site and spec an excel with city pack then you can see what it comes with over the dynamic …

Maybe also download a brochure.

This might not be relevant to the Cross at all, but when I bought my (non-Cross) Yaris, the specs were Icon, Design, Dynamic and Excel.

The Dynamic had the City pack, which added all-around proximity sensors, power folding mirrors and blind spot monitors.

The Excel got all that as standard, but had the Tech pack which added the auto-dimming mirror, JBL sound system and the all important HUD!

This is outdated info now as it's all changed (No more Dynamic, replaced by GR Sport, and seemingly no option packs either!), and the Cross specs and options were slightly different anyway (I think it had options for a 360 degree camera system which I would have loved on my normal Yaris!)

That mate has bought a Takumi AWD with Astro grey which takes it over 40k but they can deduct delivery and something else to bring it back under.

The 40k threshold isn't the OTR price I think, just the list price of the car and factory options, maybe some other stuff I'm forgetting, but things like PCP interest and delivery don't count toward it I don't think...

I must admit though, if the price was that close to the threshold, and with no guarantee the price won't go up between order and delivery like what happened to the RAV4 people, I'd be much less inclined to order such cars as you're effectively paying an extra £2250 for the car (Or more if the premium tax goes up during the 5 year period! It's really unfair that they can raise the tax without raising the threshold level too - The two should be linked at the very least!!))

It is the OTR price that they use, so any extras etc are included,  see below, from HMRC site:

There’s a VED surcharge payable on cars with an ‘on the road’ (OTR) price of £40,000 when new, which stands at £390. This cost must be paid annually on top of the standard flat rate.

They cannot deduct anything...he'll get caught with that extra tax.

I remember a similar issue many years ago where the road tax depended on the horse power.  The effect was the production of under powered engines to avoid the tax.

Also how people bought vans without side windows rather than cars.

If sales at the £40k margin start to flag I can see manufacturers offering upgradable base models.

Drive it off the forecourt, around a roundabout for the upgrade shop to add extras.  Extras such as software upgrades to equipment built in yet not enabled.   I mean, who would have musked that?

Hmmm where are you seeing that? I had a quick look and all the gov.uk links I can find specifically say List price, e.g.

https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/6421b9a42fa8480013ec0c1e/v149-rates-of-vehicle-tax-for-cars-motorcycles-light-goods-vehicles-and-private-light-goods-vehicles.pdf

https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax-rate-tables

"Vehicles with a list price of more than £40,000
You have to pay an extra £390 a year if you have a car or motorhome with a ‘list price’ of more than £40,000. You do not have to pay this if you have a zero emission vehicle.

The list price is the published price of the vehicle before it’s registered for the first time. It’s the price before any discounts are applied."

...which to me suggests that the delivery etc. wouldn't count anyway...?

I think this is what they’re working on - list price, not on the road price.
