Yaris 57 plate Battery drain - diagnosis (alternator????)

hello,

I had posted previously below, about my Yaris, I had one chap diagnose and replaced some module by the right side of drivers wheel, the car went ok for another month or so then Battery drain started again after about 4-5 days of rare use. I have had 5 new batteries put in but each seems to get damaged by something and still draining. the chap said he would have to charge me to diagnose again.... so went elsewhere, they came back saying there is diode in alternator causing 0.25 drain to Battery, showed me the amp meter to show the drain in locked state and quoted me £385 for replacement of alternator.

I am stuck what to do - he car is brilliant runs well and starts most days and if not will start straight away with power pack jump start, never stalls etc, I cannot afford this cost as already spent out £300 on getting this far 😞

has anyone come across this, any advice at all? my usual mechanic is wary and not come across this issue before....

Maybe look on eBay to find it cheaper new (or SH) and change it at home or with a more mechanical friend if you have one. Now you know what is the issue, make sure you have the tools or the space to change it yourself if you want that.

If you don't want to change it yourself maybe search for a different cheaper garage or maybe just a garage that will change/repair that diode?

Try and find an auto electrician near to where you live. They may be able to rebuild your alternator or exchange it for a reconditioned one.

The last time I had alternator issues was with my Carina II. The cost of rebuilding it was a fraction of what a new one from Japan would've cost.

It's easy to replace, I'd try the salvage yards first for a second hand one, original alternators are best.

Thank you all! I really don’t want to have to give up on the car it’s been amazing! How long should alternator repair take? Wish I had a mechanical friend at times like this!

Best to ring an auto electrician and enquire. The company I used in the early 90's were based next to the Hangar Lane gyratory in London, and a quick search shows they are still trading from the same location.
