Steering Goes Stiff in Reverse

I recently got a 2003 Toyota Avensis AVENSIS 1.8 T3-X VVT-I 4d 127 BHP. Everything works fine, except that the steering sometimes goes stiff when in reverse gear, with no warnings lights. It eases off itself without turning the engine off when moving forward. It does use an electric motor power steering (emps). I'm also aware it hadn't quite been used for a few months before I got it. Does anyone have an idea what the solution could be?

Hi, You say that the car hadn't been used for some time so that may well be the problem.Have you taken the car for a long run and then tried it. If this doesn't make any difference then It could be a dry steering joint. Have you checked the tyre pressures and tyres for excessive wear If the tracking or camber is out this can also cause the problem.

Have you also noticed any noises when turning the steering.

It is likely that a good run will resolve this.😄
