Toyota Yaris 2012 1.3L P0420 Code

Hi,

So recently i've been having some issues with my car. Firstly a couple of weeks ago the car was sluggish and not accelerating, so I took it to a mechanic and he said my catalytic converter was blocked. He then fixed this by cleaning the catalytic converter for me. I now have a CEL with the p0420 code. When driving downhill the exhaust leaves behind a cloud of smoke, also the exhaust smells of fuel. I suspect the catalytic converter is fine , could be something else. Has anyone else experienced the same issue?

Thanks

P0420 and a cloud of smoke means it's stoned 😉

It's either a failed o2 sensor, the cat has collapsed or fouled with oil (the engine burns oil), i would think it's the latter if you getting smoke under engine braking (oil passing the rings or excessive crankcase pressure due to a bad PCV valve)

pull an o2 sensor and inspect the cat with a camera/boroscope

Just seen your other post about the noisy exhaust.

Everything you describe here and in the other thread points to a blocked manicat. I had exactly the same on my Auris 1.33L including masses of smoke when using engine braking on descents. Mileage was around 95k.

Long short short. The latest recommended Toyota plugs (SC16's) were a disaster:
