Anyone use AI to help with repair info?

I’ve tried ChatGPT 4 and Google Bard/Gemini to narrow down issues or get repair instructions. So far I’ve either gotten back super generic information, wrong information, or it just refers me to the manual.

  • Has anyone used AI to help them work on their car? What did you use & how did it go?

Since I couldn’t find anything that works, I've built an AI tool which has repair info for my 96 Tacoma (day job = software engineer). Idea could be to expand this out if others find it useful.

  • Anyone in trying it out? Just DM me and I’ll send you the link... all I ask for is some feedback in return!

Cheers

Hi Ben, I have used a couple of these AI's but answers are a bit hit and miss. Have you also found this to be the case. Is the AI tool you have created just for the Tacoma. If not I will give it a try and would be happy to give you feedback.😄

Hey Bob, thanks for the note. You're right... its been hit or miss for me too.

So far I've setup the tool just for a simple job on my Gen1 Tacoma to test... font/rear brakes. I liked the results I got so far though...took some work to get it proper!

What do you think would be helpful for your Auris? Diagrams, videos, conversation to narrow down an issue? Etc?

Maybe I'll also shoot you a DM in case you want to see what I have so far for the Tacoma 👍

Hi Ben, Whilst AI has really developed, experience IMO will still be the key to many problems with a car. Having said that yes wiring diagrams and videos are a great help but as I have found myself there can be limited information online especially when you need it.

That why the forum is such a good place as the answers are generally given by experience of the same issues.

I would be happy to see what you have produced so far and please DM me and I will take a look.😄👍

anything pre-2002 in mainly printed hard copy scans and not usually imported in OCR, so not indexed apart from file names and tags/titles you may have better luck using the Toyotas RM numbers eg. https://archive.org/details/1996-toyota-tacoma-factory-service-manual

1996 will be hardback aftermarket territory (haynes/chilton/clymer for the US market)

No but sometimes I use it for other technical things. Btw your idea of crafting a customized AI tool for your 96 Tacoma sounds cool tho

I wouldn't use AI. It just scans the internet and collates and summarises what it has found.  It cannot differentiate between what is correct and what is incorrect.

Hey All

I FINALLY have something to show you!

Right now I'm calling my little tool autoGenius and I've trained it so far on 1st gen taco brakes. If you have any time, would love to get your feedback and thoughts.

Basically, you can ask any question about Tacoma brakes and it should be fast, accurate and provide sample pictures + videos.

There's a 10 question survey where I'm trying to learn from what people want/think.

Steps:

  1. ASK questions about Toyota Tacoma brakes
  2. ANSWER a 10 question survey

Really appreciate any support,

Ben
