Apologies in advance if this is a daft question.

Just picked up my car and it has a locking wheel nut together with a numerical code.

Unsurprisingly it's quite heavy and I don't fancy carting it around every time I leave the car/would probably forget, but if I left it in the car I guess that defeats the object as anyone trying to steal the wheels would find the nut and just use it.

Any obvious solutions I am overlooking (apart from don't buy a car with fancy wheels).

On a VW I had it was kept in the boot under the floor - there was a holder for it in the boot under tray. It’s locked away so not easily reached if someone breaks in.

maybe you can push it into the polystyrene under tray if your car has one?

if someone breaks in the alarm will go off anyway

If you don't leave it in the car, what happens if you get a puncture, you're a distance away from home, and the wheel cannot be taken off?

Leave it in the car near to where the spare wheel is ......

Hi David, Have you asked if a duplicate locking nut is available so you can keep one in the car and one a home. Obviously if you get the car broken into and the locking nut stolen you can call out a breakdown service and they will take the car home if you have that level of service. If you get a puncture you still have one in the car.Just a thought .

Do people really break into cars looking for the locking wheel nut in order to steal the alloy wheels off the car?

If you’re concerned about it, just hide the locking wheel nut under the floor in the boot. A thief isn’t going to hang about searching the car with the alarm going off!

Just put them under the boot floor, ready for use.

I have my secret place where I keep wheels locking nut socket and cat cover socket. It’s in the car but not the glove box or boot under floor, just in case someone is interested, break in and wants to help itself.

I always left it in the glove box with the service book as the only time I ever needed it was when getting new tyres or servicing

Just put them somewhere convenient but out of sight in the car - They're manufacturer rims, nobody is going to go out of their way to steal them!

Keep it in the car, your MOT centre / Breakdown chap/ess will appreciate it, as will your accident repair centre.
