Thanks to the guys who responded to me telling how to switch off the "white line follower " and pointed out that it comes alive again when you switch on th ignition.

I want to switch it off permanently since weaving backwards and forwards on narrow country lanes which , occasionally , have white lines,  does nothing for my equilibrium !    Anyone got a solution please ?      Has Mr. Toyota recognised the problem and has he got any solution ?

My sanity is at risk !!!

Emergency Lane Keeping Systems became mandatory within the EU for vehicles with new Type Approval from 6th July 2022, and will be mandatory for all new vehicles from 6th July 2024. As far as I'm aware, the UK will continue to follow EU vehicle safety legislation.

Presumably Toyota have prepared for this mandatory fitment in advance of July, and this will mean that these systems cannot be turned off permanently.

Get used to it .......

You can thank the sueing culture of the USA where drivers falling asleep and maming themselves make it somebody else’s problem and crusty woke judges awarding vast amounts of money.  So, when owners won’t take responsibility for their own actions, Toyota mitigate such claims by defaulting to on.

Sueing...you must mean ...Suing?

Where on earth have you gleaned this information...surely no judicial system in the world , would ever conceive to "award vast amounts of money" , to a driver who has fallen asleep.  I suspect any money due , in compensation, would for the injury or damage, that the sleeper has caused, and rightly so ??

The "crusty judge woke" comment is hilarious...and a rather ignorant statement?  The sometimes... absurd woke culture,  has nothing to do with compensating , an injured party??

I reckon that most of the installed safety system on our cars, are in response to previous accidents or incidents, and I, for one, welcome them, even if some are a little clumsy , and a tad intrusive. ( a bit like me 🙂 )

To be fair it's more to do with Toyota's ethos aligning with the EU's directive to have zero road deaths than any lawyer-happy smegpots; Europeans generally aren't as litigious as USAians and still have more of a co-operative attitude than the USA's more everyone-for-themselves culture.

Toyota have always prided themselves on having very safe cars and out of all the manufacturers would put on the most safety gear as standard rather than being an optional extra or only available on high-end models.

I did think it was starting to get a bit overkill ("How many airbags should we put in the car sir?" "YES!" "What do you mea-" "ALL OF THEM!!" "What, every one in exist-" "YES! BWAHAHA!" - Seriously, I'm expecting to see that SecureFoam collision restraint system from Demolition Man appearing in a new model any time now...), and now that we're at the point where the safety systems occasionally try to kill me, I think we've may have gone over the optimal peak.

Until the legislature work out that you can't fix people with technology unless you want to go full 1984, then we're stuck with increasingly nannying vehicles.

I'm with you, you cannot fix "stupid"... 🙂 , but to be fair...hold your hands up ...those of you, that haven't made a boo boo,  whilst driving...so can we agree, that these safety bits and bobs , are a handy guiding light, and certainly not foolproof ?

It's not so much stupid, but the decline in driving standards.

I take pride in my driving ability and try to keep it up to snuff, but I feel I am in the minority, with most other drivers clearly not taking it seriously as they are eating a burger, chatting to their passenger, looking at their phone, generally not concentrating fully while driving a potential killing machine.

The vast majority of bad drivers don't get penalized, and of those that do very rarely do they get banned or retrained. IMHO if you get a driving ban you should have to retake the test, not just get get your license back after the ban period.

The safety systems I am in two minds about - I can't quite bring myself to turn them off as they have helped on occasion, but the false-positives are far too high and the amount of close calls I've had because the ADAS took control away from me at a critical moment when it really really shouldn't have should not be anywhere near so high - The basic problem is they are not set up for the tight urban environment I drive in, where everything is closer and tighter - It just can't cope properly.

TBH it would all be much better if there was a big red OVERRIDE! button I could mash to regain control of the car in such situations, instead of waiting the several long panicky seconds it takes for the ADAS to realize that there is no problem and to give me control back!

Absolutely - I don't consider myself a particularly good driver but I reckon I'm better than two thirds the other drivers I see on the roads and this shouldn't be the case! At least 1 third of those should probably have their licences taken away right now as they are dangers to themselves and others! (Apparently ignoring red lights is now a thing here - People literally just drive through them at pedestrian crossings and road works if they don't see other people coming! Such people should not be allowed to keep their licences, but there's no enforcement and the police aren't interested unless you commit to being a court witness so they just continue as there's no consequences for their wrongdoing)

In fact, I bet if they could do that, it would reduce accident statistics to their target levels immediately

Fell asleep while driving on UK roads almost impossible.
The moon like surfaces, craters, volcanos, the extra kerbs.traffic islands, road works, restrictions, and the overall driving culture, especially if you keep up with traffic,  will make any uk road trip more like a rollercoaster experience 🎢 rather than travelling by car.  😂👌 , not so easy to fell asleep 😴

You’ve never forgiven me for being right about the cvt have you😉.  I’m not brilliant at spelling because I missed a lot of school due to poor upbringing - you must have been more fortunate because that’s the second poke at grammar today.  I can however assure you that a lot of the thinking behind Toyotas safety systems comes from damage limitation.  I know that because I wasn’t too thick to make it into engineering meetings with many of the world’s vehicle manufacturers.

I didn't get involved with the CVT discussions ? (did I)

I'm not too sure what you mean re "damage limitation" , do you mean damage to the vehicle , the people , or perhaps any future negligence claim?  Toyota only needs to comply with current vehicle legislation, but, in fact go way beyond, what is required?

I didn't mention all your spelling mistakes...there's more than one...I was just making sure, that I was on the right track?

Punctuation seems a bit off but there’s such a lot of questions there.  Get some help and if you still don’t understand, come back to me.

You still haven't clarified, about where you got the "crusty judge", statement from , or why you think, that I challenged you in a CVT discussion? ???

I can see that admin has removed your disgusting statement , in the spare wheel discussion...rightly so...get a grip.

If it wasn’t you, you’ve got no reason to worry about it, it isn’t an insult I was wondering why you might get so uptight about my comments.   Toyota had a sticking accelerator problem in the US where local judges were awarding vast quantities of money in very loose claims and the same situation put the company I worked for into Chapter 11 because when they’d done claiming for those that had any sort of bronchial ailment, they started claiming for anyone that worked in the industry on the grounds they might become ill.  Whether you choose to believe it or not, I’ve sat in meetings with vehicle manufacturers where the possibility of litigation and legal claims become part of the development program and it adds a considerable amount of money to the cost of the vehicle in some cases.  It’s a culture that I find weary and disappointing and it’s made its way here along with entitlement and censorship because people look for ways of becoming offended.  Maybe somebody complained about my “disgusting” quip about the possibility to get offended about certain words filter if you are that sort of adult” but that’s OK, I’m not offended by a mod that has acted on a complaint and I apologise to him and him only for any extra work it generated.  I think you can block me if you continue to find my comments offensive, I don’t do it on purpose and Clarkson writes far worse in a national newspaper, it’s called a sense of humour with an underlying message.  It’s a sense of humour that’s is born out of frustration endless woke snowflake entitled culture and despite us all being grown up, there is a good chance these days that someone will find any reason to be upset.  I am a qualified mechanic with a lot of experience and a lot of experience of Toyota and other Japanese brands and I’ve not only written most of the technical bulletins in the RAV4 section but I’ll come to the aid of anyone with a problem and I’ll join in with the banter even if there’s a risk that a post might offend someone who’s looking to be offended but I never ever go out of my way to offend someone personally.  The towny lads at college used to have a name for me that the hurt filter will definitely choke on that hints that Derbyshire sheep have been seasoned in a rather unusual way but it was in jest and it didn’t hurt one bit.  I’m an atheist and I only believe that in humans there is only the s*x you were born with but I comply with the pronoun if it’s not too silly.  I’m at an age where if I get censored or blocked I won’t be offended, I’ll crack on.  I used to love Sam the American Eagle in the muppets!

ROFL 🤣 it’s kicked out the word s*x.   For the hard of thinking, it wasn’t six and it wasn’t sox it was that awfully offensive word that is an alternative to gender.  I can hear Sam right now!
